The historic Hotel Mediodia is perfectly situated for exploring the city of Madrid. It is just across the street from Atocha train station, and is right next to the Reina Sofia gallery of modern art. The hotel backs onto a square filled with cafes, eateries and handy ATM cash machines, and is only a very short walk away from Retiro Park and the Prado gallery.

Our room had a lovely balcony, looking out across the tree tops to the train station. When we closed the shutters at night, most of the street noise disappeared, and we had a quiet and restful stay. Rooms feature a safe, air conditioning and large bathrooms, with good hot running water and hair dryers.

For the price, this is a great hotel and comes highly recommended.

We agree with all the reviews that comment on the perfect location. Whether you arrive from the airport by bus or train, it's right across the road from Atocha station, and a few metres from the Metro.

It's also next to Reina Sofia Museum, close to Prado and the Retiro park, and has many shops and cafes nearby. Here's a tip: if you're on a budget and want to buy things from a supermarket, turn left out of the hotel and go to the junction where you will see Atocha metro station. Turn left into Calle Atocha, and walk up here past a few restaurants, and you will find a couple of good, modern supermarkets on the left, in the vicinity of Anton Martin Metro station. From here, by the way, it's only about ten minutes walk to Sol.

The hotel has a very grand entrance and lobby, and there is a lift to all floors. You can request a 'quiet' room at the rear, overlooking Reina Sofia, which we did, but we were there on May Day holiday and there was a concert going on in the square. Not the hotel's fault, of course.

The rooms are fine - nicely decorated, great bed and a modern powerful shower. There's also a small fridge.

As several others have commented, the hotel really needs to do something about the lack of tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms. The cafeteria closes at 11am, so when you check in feeling thirsty and hungry, the first thing you have to do is go out shopping when all you want to do is relax. You may wish to consider taking a travel kettle.

We didn't use the cafeteria at all - we always travel on a budget, and thought €8.80 for a basic breakfast was a bit steep. See my review of Rodilla a couple of doors down for a cheap and tasty breakfast (coffee and pastry for €2.20) - they also do takeaways. We saw several guests bringing in takeaways from Rodilla - a missed opportunity for the hotel, there.

I have a Windows phone and the WiFi didn't work with it. This is strange, because the same phone has been fine with WiFi in hotels all over Europe, in the Starbucks at the rear of the hotel, and at the airport. In fact, everywhere except the hotel. One helpful member of staff said it was a problem with the way the hotel server was set up, and gave me a temporary password to the Reception WiFi, which worked fine, although I had to go down to Reception to check my business emails. One less helpful member of staff said it must be a problem with my phone (Bill Gates, take note!) When I tried to explain that the phone was fine, he demonstrated that his phone was OK, then turned his back on me and walked away. A bit of training needed there!

The hotel has a convenient and secure luggage storage facility when you check out.

All in all, we were pleased with the hotel, but might look for something a little more user-friendly next time.

Room Tip: It's normally quieter at the back, facing Reina Sofia museum.

Although the hotel setting seems currently very nice they only provide you with a very flat small pillow , consequently me and a friend went down stairs to reception to ask for another pillow. After waiting for at least 5 minutes to be served even though we were the only person in the lobby , i politely asked if we could have a few more pillows as there was 4 of us in our room , to which they then replied to me in spanish and arrogantly , singularly “ NO” . I then said pardon and they said “NO” again . i thought this was very rude and not professional:( Past our arrival time ( 3 o’clock ) our room was still not available until 45 minutes later which was a bit disappointing:(

Pretty standard hotel with simple but clean rooms in a distinct location: Next to Reina Sofia Museum and over the street from Madrid’s main train station Atocha. Staff was friendly. Hotel is totally sufficient for a layover or if you’re out and about.
