Room was clean and had a balcony overlooking Roman ruins. Work was still in progress so had a rude awakening the next morning. Toiletries were cheap and pretty useless. Staff were friendly. Superb location in proximity of amphitheatre shops, bars and restaurants. Used the secure parking the other side of the plaza at 11 euros (pre booked)

Balcones azules is a very nice pension, located in the centre of Cartagena. We spend 2 nights here and it was very nice. Staff is very friendly and helpfull. Rooms are not very big but very clean and all the comfort you need! There's free wifi.

At 50€ a night, this is not what many travellers might call "budget accommodation" but in Cartagena (not the cheapest holiday destination in Spain), this is about as good as the prices get. Be aware, there are cheaper alternatives, but they lie many kilometres out of town, something the booking websites seem to keep in the small print!
So a small, beautifully clean pension within the old town, with friendly, helpful staff. It has functioning WiFi, and heating/air conditioning throughout the year. The room size was adequate, containing a double wardrobe, bedside cabinets for storage and ensuite
bathroom. The surprise? I woke up next morning after arriving the night before, and opened my balcony winds to find...... an archaeological site in progress with working archaeologists excavating a Roman Forum and its neighbouring streets. What a privilege: I have never been a witness to such a thing in my life. One small gripe (there always has to be one!): the mattress , although not causing me sleepless nights, always left me with an aching neck and shoulders the next morning.

Room Tip: A street view will give you a position of the archaeological site.

First the positives: The hostal is conveniently located, had a local Street Food festival right next to it with a great ambiance to boast, and it seems newly built.
The negatives: We were surprised by the very late check-in (14:00). While we understand it is Spain, other places in the country we have been at have earlier times. We were in the city very early in the morning and would have appreciated if the room had been ready a few hours before. Despite other reviews saying the staff was very friendly, it was the opposite for us. For starters, we were greeted by an old man who never said "you're welcome," or "bye." You are also required to leave your keys with him when you leave the hostal - something they never told us when we checked in. Their Wifi is also nonexistent. While this may not be a problem for locals (we have Spanish phones), it can be quite a nuisance if you're from out of the country when the Wifi doesn't reach your room at all. Lastly, their bathroom showers have the toughest and most complicated doors ever. It opened by itself as I showered and spilled shower everywhere. Quite annoying. Overall it was ok as the title goes, staff needs improvement and a few things here and there made the stay what it was.

We needed a place to stay at late notice, and we were very happy with our choice in the end. The hotel is simple and clean, with very friendly staff. The location in great - only a few minutes walk from the sea front and we loved the fact our room over looked one of the archeology sites in Cartagena. Our room was a decent size for the price we paid. We'd happily go back, and recommend this to anyone looking for a reasonably priced place to stay.

Room Tip: Although the rooms at the front overlook the street, it's lovely a quiet, so don't be put off!
