I stayed in a cave room (sasso) and what a unique experience! The views from the terrace are lovely- you can see all of the old town of Matera in front of you. Breakfast was wonderful- more options than I am used to seeing in Italy and you can enjoy it on the terrace with the views. My room was off a beautiful courtyard and was very quiet. Wifi and air conditioning worked great. The smell was a bit "cavey", but that's to be expected and the room was spotless. The shower was particularly unique- built into part of the cave, but very modern. The staff were helpful and friendly. My only issue was waking up to very tiny ants crawling all over me, which was probably due to being in the cave. The receptionist seemed surprised to hear this, so it was probably a unique situation. It didn't change my enjoyment of the place. The walk to the old town is within 10 minutes and there are shops and restaurants nearby. Be aware that if you are coming by public transportation- bus, train, etc, you are not within walking distance of the hotel and will need to use a taxi to take you to and from the station. It cost about 15 euros for each taxi ride I took, coming from the bus station and going to the train station. The staff can order taxis and they come very quickly. The hotel is an excellent value. Overall, I would definitely stay here again- probably in a regular room as opposed to a cave room, but I'm glad that I had the cave experience!

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to slight musty smells, a regular room as opposed to a cave room is probably a good idea.

Fantastic terrace with amazing view back towards Matera. Has both cave and standard rooms with air con, newly refurbished. Short walk into the main part of town. Parking available nearby on the street. Great breakfast on the terrace, friendly and helpful staff. Excellent stay!

Room Tip: Can opt for a cave room when available

Absolutely loved our stay here. We had a family room (sassi) which had a private courtyard. The rooms were clean and spacious and loved the cave interior. The views were breathtaking and location excellent. Could not fault this hotel. Would definitely recommend and would stay here again if lucky enough to return to this magical town.

Lovely hotel in a great setting. The terrace gives one of the best views of Matera. The staff here are great and very enthusiastic to share its charms. Breakfast was amazing with the best focaccia I have ever tasted. I would definitely come back.

Matera is an Unesco heritage site. The deep riverbed made by the river over thousands of years is very nice and intriguing. The area is very old. It is said that the Romans called the place Matera.
60 year ago the caves were the shame of Italy, people living in grotto's without water or electricity.
After a book about the Government has build a new city part te move the people into.
For today it is a beautiful location, filled with steps and views.
Il Belvedere is wisely located next to the cliff. It has a terrace were you can take exiting photographs of the clips and the old city.
Some of the rooms are in the rocks. We had a room upstairs, newly made.
Some steps but good.
And... we could park our car right in front of the hotel.

Room Tip: If you wish you can stay in a cave like the whole area.
