“Good hotel for a good price”
Reviewed 29 October 2009

Of all of our hotel stays in Italy, this is the only one that had a balcony attached to the room for an outside view. Problem is, when you look outside, you see Naples...not much to look at there. Naples is a dump...trash on the streets...questionable people walking around...scary after dark. I'd recommend not walking around after night fall. The only reason we stayed in Naples for 2 nights was b/c we wanted to explore Capri and the Amalfi Coast towns and try the pizza at L'Antica Pizzeria Da Michele (supposedly the best pizza in the world). It was pretty good.

We arrived in Naples at 10 PM. Got out of the train station and had a hard time finding the hotel. We were walking around w/ our luggage and were scared of getting robbed. Questionable characters on the streets staring at us, crazy dogs running around on streets etc. Luckily a hooker was nice enough to guide us the right way. This hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Napoli Centrale train station (if you know where you are going). This hotel is a 20 min walk to Molo Beverello (port where you catch the jet for Capri). If you wanna catch the Circumvesuviana train to go to Pompeii or Sorrento, the station is just 5 mins away.

Majority of the hotel rooms are on the 6th and 7th floor. The room was spacious and we paid 52 Euros per night for a double bed room w/ a private bath. It had a telephone, refrigerator, and a balcony. Bed was clean and comfortable. Our toilet was interesting in that we had to push the button 3-5 times to get it to flush. It didn't bother us much since we figured out the trick to flush it. Breakfast is served in a nice private area. You can seat inside or sit outside on the terrace. Pretty nice setup. Breakfast was NOT good. The selection is pretty poor and the bread and cheese seemed stale.

The biggest problem we had with this hotel was that the staff was incompetent. Our AC didn't work when we checked in and when we called them, they would not give us a straight answer. They would make all kinds of excuses and lies about how it works alternate hours, alternate days, etc. etc. They even told us that they are coming up to check in our room in 10 mins and never showed up. We called them 4 times and nothing happened. Then at 3 AM, the AC just started working and pretty much worked the entire time. Also, when our parents called the hotel to talk to us, they kept them on hold forever and never transferred the calls to our room even though our parents were told that they are being transferred. So basically, figure things out for your self cuz if you expect help from the front desk, you're NOT gonna get it.

So over all it's a decent hotel but since the price point is good, that makes it a good value to stay here.

My partner and I stayed here for one night as we had an early flight. We checked in just after 12 and had a room with a massive terrace overlooking the roof tops of Naples. We could see Vesuvius from the terrace and it was brilliant to sit up here with a couple of beers and watch all the action down below.

The area around the hotel wasn't thought, anymore more dangerous than any big city. Sure, there are a lot of street hawkers selling all sorts of fake merchandise, but they don't bother you as you walk along. We walked from the hotel to the Archeolgoical Museum which took about 10-15 minutes each way and didn't feel uncomfortable walking around. Indeed, probably the locals are friendlier than somewhere like London, we saw another couple who looked lost and had a map out, at least two people approached them without being asked to give directions and help out. The shops here are really cheap.

The room was basic but clean. It would have been much better if there was a table and chairs on the terrace, luckily there was a stool in the bathroom and a chair in the bedroom so we could sit outside. All that space is wasted with no where to sit! There was no noise that we could hear once the windows were closed and we slept well on the clean and comfortable bed.

If you do stay here, make sure you pay a trip to the bar. It was 5E for a spirit and coke (no beers or anything else we could see) but the measures are VERY generous (think a half pint glass filled with vodka!). The spirits are all the same price so drinking a decent whisky costs the same as a Jack Daniels.

The staff here are excellent, they had our key ready as soon as we walked through the door each time without even asking your name and were very helpful.

Our only gripe with this hotel was the breakfast which was a scant continental affair -bread, cereal, coffee or tea. It wasn't very appetising but then that could be us, after having had a couple of pints of spirits the night before!

We paid £46 for the room. The guy we spoke to in the next room had paid about the same walking in off the street and we all agreed it was very good value!

The hotel was fine - a 3 star I think and there were no extras. If I were to stay in Naples again, I would not stay in this area - but it was easy to find from the train station and had a fantastic pizzeria 2 mins walk away that the concierge recommended. The concerierges at the hotel were fantastic, one helping me to make collect call back to NZ even though he didn't know how to himself! The staff in the breakfast room were also helpful and friendly.

I was slightly annoyed that I got home and discovered that they had charged 1 euro cent to my credit card - I paid for the room in cash. This also incurred a currency conversion fee as well and although not expensive I felt that it was a little silly.

We arrived without a booking and stayed for a week here although we originally said we'd stay two nights. The whole hotel is situated on about the seventh floor and the breakfast room is both inside - and outside on the roof. It is a magic place to stay - safe, good airconditioning, interesting views, speedy and modern elevator, very good staff - and in August it was very inexpensive. Breakfast was good and they soon knew our particular likes and needs, for instance bringing our coffee just as we wanted it without being asked. Our room was spacious, extremely clean and a good bed, and the little balcony, though small, was great.
The staff at reception were wonderful; we wanted to go for a drive via taxi one day and the young man ordered our taxi then came out and explained to the driver exactly what we wanted to do and where we were to get out. (Our Italian is poor). We were a little apprehensive but it was just what we wanted. Another time we had a bottle of wine we couldn't open and instead of trying to sell us one of theirs - they have a tiny bar - the receptionist went to great trouble to remove the cork. Also if you stay heed their tourist advice; I went to Capri although it was suggested we might enjoy another island more, and I wish I listened to them.

The hotel is located only 5 minutes walk from the station and is also very convenient for the airport Alibus which leaves from outside the post office next door to the station (you need to buy tickets on the bus, not Tabbachi). The staff were friendly, spoke good English and soon recognised us each time we returned from a journey out. The reception and bar are located at street level but the hotel is actually on the 6th and 7th (top) floor of the building. The views from our room on the 6th floor were great and at this height, with double glazing, the street noise could not be heard. The room was a good size and had 2 single beds pushed together to make a large double. There was a fridge, TV (satellite channels) and sun balcony. The bathroom was clean and modern and the shower worked well. There was a hairdryer in the bathroom.
The breakfast room had a large sun terrace. The food was quite basic with bread provided at the table and a choice of cereal, cheese, ham, fruit, yoghurt. The coffee was fantastic!
The hotel was a very convenient base to explore Naples and Pompeii although there were few restaurants in the immediate area.

We were lead to a bare bones room and upon opening the door were overwhelmed by the stench of sewer. Not surprisingly, the toilet would not flush. The bathroom was filthy. We had a difficult time checking out without having to pay for the room. Much better places to stay in Naples.

We decided to take an overnight trip from Rome to see Pompeii and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. After reading the reviews here on TA, we decided on the Hotel Garden Napoli. We booked several months in advance and got a terrific $90 US rate for one night. The hotel is conveniently located. On checking in, we were escorted to the elevator and told that our room was on the first floor. The attendant pushed the "1" button on the elevator and we started going up...and up...and up. To our amazement, the first floor is actually the top floor of the building...about 7 stories up. The room was big, very clean, firm bed, adequate bathroom (though the wash basin had limited space for toiletries), and the rate included a skimpy continental breakfast. The view from the balcony was outstanding! And we didn't have any trouble with street noise. The staff was friendly though not very helpful when we asked for restaurant suggestions.

I would say that the neighborhood is very colorful. I never felt threatened and we wandered around after dark. Had a great meal at a family restaurant on Garibaldi Square and actually sat with a large group of "colorful" locals at a sidewalk cafe for a couple of beers. Naples was a great change of scenery from the touristy areas of Rome, Florence, and Venice that we had been visiting. I was so glad we went.

Also, the Archeological Museum was outstanding. They are doing major renovations due to earthquake damage suffered several years ago, but the collection on display is wonderful. And Pompeii was a truly amazing experience. Do not miss it.

  • Liked — Convenient location and cleanliness of room
  • Disliked — breakfast
  • Tips/Secrets — Naples is different, enjoy the change of scenery.
