We were in Naples for a cruise and had a little bit of time to explore the city. We saw a castle sitting on top of the major hill in the area and decided that it would be cool to walk to it. It was a long and strenuous walk, but we're glad we did it. The views were really great, and it made for some fun memories.

I'm not sure what else might actually be at the castle. I think there might be a museum or something, but unfortunately we didn't have time to explore it.

So if you're looking for a great view of Naples, Vesuvius, and the sea, climbing up to the castle is a great idea. Not only do you get an awesome view, you get a great workout as well.

You can get to the castle either by taking the funicular or the monumental stairs...the stairs are more rewarding but it was good to take the funicular down. Great views and interesting architecture and buildings. This is one of those times when the Neapolitan lack of interest in tourism really shows...no concessions near by (and it was hot), no guides, not many benches, no real brochures or information, the museum is somewhat removed from the castle so bring your Lonely Planet guide (or whatever) if you want/need more than panoramic views.

Didn’t have it on my plan originally but saw the great fortress on top of the hill and had some time to kill so I went for it. There must be a bus or some other transport that can take you there but I just walked up the steps - really enjoyed that climb! The castle is real grand, built on top and into the mountain, great architectural masterpiece. Also, the views of Naples and surroundings from there are amazing.

This is the main reason you go there. You get smashing panorama over Naples towards Vesuvius, sea and islands. Castle itself is not striking - thick walls, nice gate but not much to see inside apart from some art exhibitions. Ticket is EUR 5 (you can use Artecard for one of free entrances or get a discount), last admission one hour before closing. To get there you can take a funicular to Morghen or climb to Belvedere San Martino.

We went here to get out of the city a bit, and it was a nice view over the bay. We wandered around the walls, but beyond that, there is not much else to do. There is some art inside, but nothing spectacular. We also went next door to the monastery, which is a must if you have come this far.

The price was a bit steep, but we noticed that many people didn't bother to buy tickets, as there was no one taking them or really caring whether you paid or not. People just walked around and into the castle and no one was taking the tickets.
