The Cavalieri in Rome is certainly not the latest and greatest hotel. The lobby looks, on first inspection, rather dated and a little bit like a throwback to the 1970s. The hotel's website really plays up its strengths and the slightly faded glory of the building can come as a bit of a surprise.

However, once you get past the first impression the Cavalieri really holds its own as a truly Five star experience. The service was excellent and the rooms are very luxurious, with lovely bedding and Acqua di Parma toiletries. Definitely stay on the Imperial Club floor if you can, the club room and concierge are excellent and a good place to start the day, or to have a drink before you head out at night.

The Cavalieri is a little bit further out of town, but the upshot of this location high on a hillside above the city is the beautiful view - it is worth making sure that you request a room that looks out across the city. But clearly if you are just in Rome to shop you might be better at one of the hotels right in the heart of town. The Cavalieri does offer a shuttle which makes the short journey into the city pretty painless.

The greatest draw of this hotel is the wonderful outdoor Olympic sized pool, in the middle of summer when the temperatures routinely touch 40 degrees this is the best place in Rome to be. There were many chic Romans and a few well known Hollywood stars lounging by the pool which helps create a very exclusive atmosphere. There is also a wonderful indoor pool, gym, spa complex.

The food in the hotel was excellent, the restaurant on the terrace above the pool was really Michelin star quality. Not to be missed are the fabulous buffet breakfasts and the Sunday lunch buffet which was among the best I have seen in many years staying in the world's best hotels. The restaurant service was similarly excellent.

If you are price sensitive it is worth noting that all this luxury certainly doesn't come cheap, but its certainly worth it. We had friends who opted to stay at the Westin Excelsior but who ended up at our hotel for the majority of the stay because they were so won over by its charms and facilities.

This hotel really does have something a bit magic about it - the bricks and mortar are nothing special but the service and location make for a wonderful, relaxing, decadent Roman experience.

Dear Sir/Madam,

We would like to thank you for choosing the Rome Cavalieri, The Waldorf Astoria Collection during your recent visit to the Eternal city.

We are most grateful that you took the time to submit a reviewand it was a pleasure to see that our services and facilities met with your expectations. All guest comments are read with utmost interest as this is the best means of measuring the standard of hospitality that we strive to reserve for all our guests.

We also hope that you have enjoyed our large collection of original works of art that make our hotel a true museum (hopefully you took advantage of the complimentary Ipod tour).

We would like to think that our distance from the centre is a plus because in that way we are away from all the city traffic noises, but as you have mentioned, the centre is just a short shuttle ride away!

Thank you and we sincerely hope we may have the pleasure of welcoming you back to The Rome Cavalieri in the near future.

The most luxurious hotel one can imagine in Rome. Rooms are decorated in a classic style, where the staff thought about every detail. When you book a room on the Imperial Floors, you have access to their Imperial Lounge, with free drinks and snacks throughout the day. Also you will have access to their perfect Spa, with swimming pool, saunas, whirpools and stem baths.

The breakfast in the morning had a great variety. Staff throughout the hotel was always friendly, and did everything for their guests.

The only minus is the location. It is located on a hill, about 15 minutes by taxi from the Vatican Museums. The hotel does offer a shuttle bus to the city centre.

We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights, a family of four with two young kids. We had two interconnecting rooms with city view. We absolutely loved this hotel. The rooms were beautiful, the service great, the breakfast was one of the biggest and with most variety I have ever seen in a hotel. The gym was also one of the best, with great equipment and free fitness classes. The indoor pool tended to get overcrowded but I guess that with warm weather, with the two outdoor pools this will not be an issue.
We spent new year's eve there, and the menus were really expensive, so we ate in our rooms, but this was still great cause we had all of Rome in our feet and watched all the amazing fireworks that started from 11pm and the whole spectacle was breathtaking.
There's a shuttle bus at the hotel, and this makes really easy reaching the center of the city.
Also there's a great tratoria, da Luciano's, ten minutes walking from the hotel, so at night you don"t have to go to the city again.
The only slight inconvenience we faced, was that although I was quoted free breaksfast when I booked the rooms, when we went to actually eat we were told that the breakfast was not included. And although I talked to the reservations person that had told me that, she didn't remember it and we would have to pay 75 euros every day to eat breaksfast. Thank God, my husband had his computer with him and I found the e-mail sent to me with the whole offer and after I forwarded it to them the whole thing was cleared.
All in all, if you can afford it I absolutely recommend this hotel.

...but Rome has so much to do we spent very little time at the hotel, just there to sleep. Very convenient to Vatican City. Walk down the hill towards the city and visit the coffee shops (espresso doppio!)

Stayed for two nights in December 2009. The rooms are fantastic, plush and with a spectacular view of Rome. The "business" internet service was the fastest I have ever used. I liked everything but the checkout process....At check-out they took my passport, but at check-out they didn't remind me to retrieve it. I almost left the hotel leaving it behind.
