“Experience the Real Roma”
Reviewed August 6, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

If you are traveling in Rome, you must stay in Mario's wonderful apartment! We stayed there for four nights this past July and could not have been more happy with it. The apartment itself is of a very good size and was very clean. In the kitchen, there is a good, four-burner gas stove, and the owner and host, Mario, even included some basic kitchen supplies i.e., olive oil, pasta and rice, spices, etc. The couch in the living room is a pull out bed, so the apartment could very comfortably fit a family of four. There is even a nice, quiet courtyard off of the bedroom. The Pigneto area is a great place to stay! While the main street, Via del Pigneto, stays lively until the early hours of the morning, the street which the apartment is located on is very quiet and we never had a problem with noise in the evening, Within a five minute walk from the front door are several grocery stores and restaurants. Also, be sure not to miss the wonderful morning market which goes from about 7:00 to midday. It is very large and you can find everything from fish and meats to local Italian fruits and vegetables. Around the apartment there are several useful bus stops: the 105 (which can get very crowded at rush hour) goes to the Termini station, a main hub for public transportation in Rome and the 81 or 810 which goes the historical center of the city. As a host, Mario was very friendly and helpful. Before our stay, he was in regular contact preparing for our arrival. He gave us very specific instructions of how to get to the apartment from the Fiumicino airport and was waiting for us in the rain when we arrived at the bus stop! Later, Mario met with us and explained the Roman public transportation system and gave us specific advice based on what we planned to see while we were in Rome. He even had a very detailed map of the city which we could borrow. Mario really helped to make our stay in Rome even more enjoyable! Overall, I highly recommend this apartment and I hope to stay here again soon!

“Comfortable well equipped apartment, short bus journey from Rome centre”
Reviewed May 24, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

We stayed here for 6 days. The owner Mario is helpful and friendly to his customers, providing key information to enable us to get around the main sites in Rome. We were able to text him for further information during our stay. The apartment is on a narrow street off the main Il Pigneto pedestrian area. The apartment is as expected and our stay there was very comfortable (beds very comfortable). I would strongly recommend this apartment.

Other general info:
Pigneto has everything you would need for self catering with 3 smallish supermarkets, an excellent daily morning market - providing fresh produce at reasonable prices. There is a good bakery at the end of the road if you would like fresh rolls/bread for breakfast or for a packed lunch and further down the road an excellent deli - where we bought some good cheese and olives.

Il Pigneto is an up and coming area. It has an edgy character and a buzz about it - but still scruffy - gentrification has not quite arrived. At night it is teeming with younger people drinking and eating in the bars/ cafes/ restaurants in the centre. As a middle aged person I was in the minority but I still felt safe and comfortable.

There are several buses/trams nearby to get you to various parts of Rome. The public transport system is well organised but at peak times the buses/ trams/ metro can be incredibly packed. I would avoid these times if possible.

The Roma pass (costing € 34 ) was not the best value for us, as we intended to visit the Villa Borghese Gallerie - but when we arrived it was booked up for 5 days so could not purchase with the pass which only lasts 3 days. Using the Roma pass we did get into the Coliseum and Forum on an express queue and avoided a long line so that has value. The 3 day transport pass was very good value at € 16.50 - we bought ours at the news stand in the Termini. Remember to put them through the yellow machine on buses/trams at the start of each journey. Pre-book on line for the Vatican Museum to avoid long queues. St Peter 's Basilica is free but there are always long queues to get through airport style security - we arrived about 9am and we waited about 30 minutes.

Rome was of course wonderful - but expect huge crowds at all the main tourist sites. I hope I will return again.

“A great place to stay in Rome”
Reviewed November 11, 2012 for a stay in October 2012

The owner of the property (Mario) was very helpful and welcoming - met us off the bus and provided us with a map and good local information. The apartment was delightful - clean, well equipped and in a good location in Pigneto - the local bakery is just round the corner, a good local food store about 100 yards away, and the wonderful daily street market selling fruit/ veg / fish/ meat etc. In the evening time there were lots of local places to eat or to have a drink (aperitivo). The transport links were very good with regular tram and bus links to Termini.
