I stayed in this hotel in May 2012 during a business journay. The hotel is located near the central station (Termini) in the university area, out from the traffic.
Despite the 4 stars and the price per room per night the level of the service is not very high: furnitures are old, and the ambient a bit decadent. The room is however quite large considering you are in Rome. The wi-fi connection never worked for two days.
The breakfast is served in a magnificient roof terrace, but the food is very standard. The fruit is not fresh and only chees and ham are available.
In general the price is too high compare to the level of the service

I stayed here for business so did not spend too long enjoying the garden or the lounge but it all looked very comfortable and attractive. the room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. I would come back on a weekend break if I had the chance. The restaurants around the hotel are very authentic and reasonably priced.

Room Tip: My room had a lovely balcony overlooking the inner courtyard. Not all rooms do.

The hotel has somewhat of a taste of grandeur past and is located in one of the less favoured parts of the capital. It's nevertheless clean with huge rooms and adequate bathrooms. It is also quiet, and many of the rooms overlook a tranquil and rather beautiful central courtyard. Breakfasts are ample and enthusiastically served, if you are lucky and the weather is good then sitting on the roof terrace is a real pleasure. So if you are after somewhere off the beaten path and don't want to pay for the glitz of better known more trendy hotels, this is a very sound choice.

Hard to imagine that in a four star hotel one would stay without hot running water - twice in less than 1 week residence.
The first night I arrived I went down at the reception with a list of complaints:
- no heating in the room (I could hear quite a loud noise of the AC working but, the room temperature would not change at all),
- the telephone with no signal,
- and most importantly no hot water for the shower!!!
The only proposal coming from the reception was changing my room with another bigger one (as if that was the problem!). I did not accept any foolish proposal and waited until next morning to have shower.

In addition, the telephone got its signal back but the AC was never working. I had to lower my expectations and accept that situation up to the third day of my stay. I woke up at around 10 am and prepared for shower - guess what, hot water still missing!!! This time, called the reception and asked to be transferred to another hotel... The answer this time was: wait for 40 mins for the problem to be fixed. It got indeed fixed after 40 mins, but I was waking up the next 2 days cross-checking for services that I believe (mostly sure) even a one-star hotel would have provided. Not to mention the quality of the food served in the morning buffet...The famous Italian coffee? Better buy some instant nescafe than try the one offered by the hotel...

I have seen other couples in the hotel staying mute in front of common problems and I just can't accept this attitude...

Wondering of the excellent online reviews... Was it my fault that I happened to be a guest of the hotel at a low season? I paid the normal price and did not even ask for extra services - just the basics...

So finally, really hoping that my herein message will either help with the clients' decision-making or make the hotel respect all the contractual obligations deriving from their current star-standing (in at least the basic standards that has to be provided to the customers)

Hotel Ateneo Garden Palace is a wonderful hotel, with spacious, comfortable rooms, pleasant and competent staff, and good breakfasts. And, it's in a good location! You can walk to Termini station in about 10 minutes, and yet the hotel area is quiet and safe.

I seem to collect quiet hotels and this is one - its fundamental to know that after a hard day touristing or conferencing then you'll get a good nights sleep. This hotel is close to the station - 10 minute walk - and was perfect for the Conference I had to attend last week. Price 130 euros for a queen size bed.Found staff were alert and quick to please - not always easy to find in Italy I must say. Internal garden looked very pleasant for a drink, chat or email session. I was only there briefly but the WIFI worked fine and the breakfast room is a cheery glassed area on the 4th floor - not much of a view - it looks over private flats and houses. There were a couple of homeless in the park out the front but really harmless. For tourism you will need to use public transport to get to sites.
