Perched right on top the Gianicolo Hill, this hotel is a short walk from the bus into the centre of town, or up to the Vatican. We stayed there for three days in April 2011, and our overall impression was good. The lady on reception was friendly and helpful, and gave us useful maps of the surrounding area and the public transport. However, as others have noted, there was a rather grumpy man who didn't believe in smiling! Our room was small (not unusual for a capital city), but very nicely refurbished, and we didn't have a problem with noise. We loved the breakfast buffet, which was in a pleasant room on the top floor. You need to be reasonably fit if you are going to walk down the steep steps into the main part of Trastevere for dinner (and back up again afterwards!), but once there we found some lovely neighbourhood restaurants, which were very good value. We got the local train in from the airport, and bought a bus pass for 11 Euros. If you want to do one of those open-topped bus tours, then the Roma Christiana buses are definitely the most frequent.
