We have a love of art nouveau (liberte in Italy )and had read that there was a house called the house of the owls Casina Delle Civette as well as the villa where Mussolini spent time here, plus some impressive Liberte buildings round the corner in Viale Regina Margherita and also in Via Dora. We were not disappointed the owl house was stunning gorgeous stain glass windows, quirky building features, the villa itself is impressive and richly decorated. the bonus is that because its off the beaten track it is not heaving with other tourists and the park is lovely we spent the best part of a day here. Mussolin's bunker is also here but we didn't have time to visit.

We got lost finding our way back to our hotel and came across this wonder. A lovely park with several water fountains to refill our bottles. Wonderful stories and pieces of art. The building are wonderful, especially the Owl House" which will transport you to a delightful fairyland. We spent a number of hours here. There is a cafe on site. It was not crowded.
We loved it. It turned out to be the highlight of our time in Rome.

I had a few hours to spare whilst in Rome and decided to visit the Villa Tollonia. I paid €7.50 for visiting both the Villa and the Casino Nobile, the museum that currently features a collection of paintings by Benvenuto Ferrazzi and other works on loan.
There are 25 conditions for free entry such as blood donors, Parisian citizens (twinned city) and for all those under the age of 6 years. No discount for any one over the age of 65 though !! An Italian failing, unlike other European countries.

The Villa Torlonia itself is a beautiful Neoclassical style building dating back to the 19th Century. One of its fames is that Mousolini lived in the grounds between 1923 and 1944 and you can still visit his bedroom (and bunker by appointmemt)
Its English picturesque-style public garden is disappointing as it has been neglected and the plants not been watered in months because the company that would do the work is under investigation as part of a corruption scandal in Rome. There were some sprinklers in action but a large pool and fountain at the rear of the building was empty and in a sorry state.

A great place to jog, have a picnic, or relax at the bar with a drink in your hand as you take shelter from the sweltering heat of the Roman sun at what was supposedly the summer getaway of the late fascist dictator Mussolini.
