“Heart of Transtevere with plenty of local charm”
Reviewed April 13, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

If you know Rome, you'll come to understand that Trastevere is the place to stay: away from the tourist jungle, yet within 15 minutes walk across the bridge (Ponte Sisto) to the much loved Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navonna, and Pantheon area; Vatican is on the same side of the river; plenty of local restaurants and rustic medieval streets unchanged for centuries. This was my fourth time in Rome and first time with two young children. It was the best, owing a huge portion to our choice in accommodation. (Previously we had reserved a place on the south side of Basilica Santa Maria in Trastevere, but cancelled after realizing that it was less local and too far to walk over to Ponte Sisto. The north side of Santa Maria basilica is better in terms of local charms, medieval streets, and access to bridge.

There are 6 units (they are renovating 2 more rooms now and says that it will be 8 units by summer 2015) in this multiple courtyard complex palazzo. (it's more of a medieval compelx rather than a renaissance palazzo) The unit we stayed (they are all different) was a double story room with double bed and bath on upper floor and sofa-bed with kitchenette(equipped with pots, dishes, and Bialetti espresso maker) in lower floor. It's rather small and dark because it's in a thick walled medieavel building, but it does keep us cool from the heat of the city. It may feel too small if you plan to stay inside long-term, but who does that in Rome when there are so many cool outdoor piazzas to hang out? If you prefer a four star hotel with room service this may not be for you because this is where locals reside in real time. We were greeted by hosts with a little girl riding a bike in the courtyard and her grandma who we found very fashionable and elegant. The hosts, Alessandro and Sabrina were approachable in their office when we needed them. They were very kind to suggest us good eateries in the area and arrange transportation to and from the airport. The unit didn't have a hairdryer, but I am sure they would have lended us one had we asked. Be reminded that the electric outlets are old style, and your regular 220V prongs will be too fat. You need an adapter for this.

I was worried after reading one negative comment about police guards with guns guarding the house, but actually they are guarding the Piazza di Sant' Egidio and this place happens to be at the center of the piazza where all actions in Trastevere come together. You will see this police in every important public spots in Rome, and should be more relieved than be worried by their presence. After staying three days, the policeman (and policelady) came to know our faces and exchanged friendly ciaos when entering the building. It's quite easy to access the building through buzzer and a set of old-fashioned keys you get at check-in. (they look like those of St. Peter's)

In short, this place has great location with plenty of local charm and lovely hosts, but is not your 4 star hotel. I would definitely recommend it to friends who share similar patterns of traveling and will stay here again when we come back to Rome.

“The best appartment you could wish for!”
Reviewed January 8, 2015 for a stay in October 2014

Great apartment with everything you need in it. Also very nice owners/ co workers, who helped us with everything we asked for (showed us some nice places nearby to eat for example). The location is also the best, right in the center of the most romantic part of Rome, Trastevere. If we come back to Rome we would definitely come back here again! (normally we wouldn't do that, but this time we'll make an exception)

“Exactly what we wanted.”
Reviewed October 20, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

We live in Tuscany but travel to Rome regularly for a few days each time. This time we found Palazzo Velli and it is the all round best accommodation we have stayed in in Rome.

A great location in the heart of Trastevere only a few meters to Piazza s. Maria in Trastevere and even closer to Cacio e Pepe. The apartment is in a wonderful historic building, recently restored, plenty of room and perfectly clean.

We will be very happy to come back.
