So, like the best treasure, getting the finest takes some searching and its not where all the dazzling trinkets are hanging.
Osteria Santa Catarina is hidden away in a quiet street, 15 minutes winding walk from the Centro Storico of Bologna.
The only restaurant in the street, so you can't miss it.
The room is long and narrow, you squeeze by the reception, till, espresso machine and bar as you enter. It's not a big restaurant, so book, or prepare to be disappointed.
We were warmly greeted and shown to our table, smartly folded white napkins and rustic brown wood furniture.
The place was already moderately busy, on a delightfully balmy Wednesday night (7:30) in October.
Orders for drinks and the food were taken promptly, our waitress knowledgeable, helpful (everyone spoke excellent English) and charismatic.
Primi piatti (first course to you) arrived within short minutes. She had soufflé of pumpkin, she said was good. I tried it....SENSATIONAL!
Now....some depressing news. I ordered lasagna Bolognese as my starter. I have been making this dish for 40 years, but what I ate this night at Osteria Santa Catarina, makes me feel humbled, even now, at how such culinary skill or perhaps it's those centuries of making life better, has yielded this sublime yet simple creation.
Enough of this almost indigestible hyperbole and superlative indulgence.
Second course was veal and veg. Simple, rustic, delicious and again done with a skill that bought out superb tastes.
