Great to visit but a lot of stairs, so don't do any shopping before as I did :) The view on top of the tower is great.

Buy you tickets online or from the tourist information for a set time. Well organised. Climb quite easy, stairs narrow in place. Great 360 degree vista from the top.
If you want to burn off some calories after eating Bologna's wonderful food or just want to admire a breathtaking view from the top, you won't regret spending 5 euros on climbing Asinelli tower. You don't have to be an athlete to participate in this climb, it can take as little as 10 minutes to go all the way up. There are a few landings in between if you need to stop and rest. In the summer time I recommend taking the tour first thing in the morning before it gets too hot. The tickets can be purchased on line or in the tourist office Bologna Welcome located in Piazza Maggiore (around the corner from Fountain of Neptune, in the middle of the building with some restaurants).
Nice place to visit, have a coffee in the piazza, admire the architecture and enjoy the surroundings
The Asinelli tower is one of the few towers built in Bologna at the end of the 12th century that still survives today. The Garisenda tower is next to it (leaning tower) but it is closed to the public. The ticket to visit the Asinelli tower can be online. I purchased it right in front of it since there is free wifi connection and I could get in at 10:15am. They allow groups of 75 people each time and the tours are spaced out each 45 minutes. It is a long way up, I felt I was never going to make it. I had to stop a couple of times to catch my breath. There is a defibrillator in the middle of the tower! But the view from the top once you are there is beautiful and worth the struggle of the climb! The way down was scary for me. The steps are narrow and worn down. I tried not to look past the steps since I don't like heights. But I think this is a must do if you are in Bologna even for a day. Well worth the 5 euros!
The cost is 5€ and you purchase your ticket over at the TI office in Piazza Magiore, a short walk away (although some people had online vouchers, too). It is a tight climb up, so claustrophobic people should avoid. The views at the top are great as you can see beyond the city and you get a good perspective of it. If you are around, go up and do it.
