I'm not sure why this museum is so highly rated. While it wasn't terrible, it wasn't particularly interesting either, and that's coming from someone that has a real love of history.

This is an interesting museum of Bologna's rather convoluted history from 500 BC through Post-WWII in over 30 rooms of exhibits, artifacts, videos, interpretive displays, etc. Although most of the labels and text panels are in Italian, you also can get a audio guide, but unfortunately it is somewhat frustrating in that it mainly provides a general overview of what is covered in each room rather than a description of the individual artifacts on display. There is an interesting cartoon history of Bologna aimed at children that is shown towards the end of the museum's exhibits that, while in Italian, has English subtitles which is actually not bad for even adults to get a quick overview of the city's history - other videos are in Italian only or loop back to back in Italian then in English. This is again frustrating as when you come upon a video you never know if you should wait for the Italian one to finish to hear the English one or if you're just wasting your time because the Italian one will just play again. These issues aside, you can spend an enjoyable hour or more learning about this fascinating city and its history.

The virtual tour of medieval Bologna was definitely the highlight ( not advisable for those with a fear of heights... it will do your head in) but otherwise fantastic! Lots of really interesting information with visual and auditory support... loved it !
The audio that comes with the general admission was perfectly complimentary to the displays...
I found the staff to be helpful and informative, and with it being freezing outside, it was a perfect way to spend several hours ( they flew!) in the warmth of the museum.

We're not great museum enthusiasts but decided to find out more about Bologna's history we would visit and were not disappointed. You also have the opportunity to have a virtual reality experience which was amazing, and well worth the extra euros, you really feel you are in ancient Bologna. I bottled out & didn't fly but maybe you will??

It was a good place to start our time in Bologna, we found out about the history of city, although it was only later in the day that we really made sense of some of the things we saw. Not much information so unless you know your history, it might disappoint.
