I wonder what it must feel like to BE Gino Fabbri. Most of us aspire to making a few people happy during our lifetime. He easily makes thousands of people happy every day. Visit La Caramella, and you'll understand. If you are in Bologna and have a car, then make the trip to his place and prepare to be delighted. If you don't have a car, figure out a way to get there anyway. Yes, it's that good, and I know that Bologna has no lack of delicious places, but this one is worth the detour. We visited several times during our stay in Bologna, never got disappointed, even got a glimpse of the Maestro himself. I felt blessed to be in his presence.

I was surprised and delighted to be taken to this little gem by a local from Bologna. From the outside the building is unassuming - even a little odd looking - a modern factory springing from the surrounding field. On opening the doors, my eyes were met by gorgeous displays worthy of the finest patisseries in France. You are enveloped in the comforting smell of fresh baking. Delicious coffee, pastries and savories.

Our first experience of Gino Fabbri was completely by chance. We had recently arrived in Bologna, Italy. Modern technology was doing its best to ensure we would never reach our intended destination and the only place we could find with any signs of life was a modern building with seating outside. People sitting on the seating with food and coffee.

Both my wife and I agreed that the worst we could do is get ourselves a coffee.

What we actually got was a welcome. Some assistance from the man himself and enough help to clarify what these two single language speakers needed to find their destination. Above and beyond doesn't go half way to describe the help we were given. We left with as many grazi's as we could muster and as many smiles and prego's as we could handle.

It wasn't until a couple of days later that we figured out what the rest of the local population has known for some time when we visited to offer our thanks for all assistance given....

The food, and particularly the cakes are spectacular. From the single mouthful strawberry and red currant tarts to a whole host of delicacies immaculately prepared and presented on spotlessly clean and chilled shelves to exhibition standard cakes in equally clean and cooled cabinets.

On our fourth visit to this fine establishment we finally saw the man himself and all the thanks we were able to achieve was a knowing nod to a gracious gentleman.

It is certainly high praise when a local who knows the history and reputation of an establishment is impressed by new examples of their neighbours provender and this was the response achieved by us when offering a chocolate soufflé cake for a special meal.

We were even given preparation advice and presentation tips by one of the chefs.

Please please please do your utmost to ignore the agricultural aroma and if there is no aroma your experience is likely to be sublime.

Thank Bryce D
