“Chiesa di Santa Croce, yet another chiesa”

Chiesa di Santa Croce
Reviewed June 26, 2017

If you visit Italy as often as I do, it is a beautiful church, but you may want to pass. I don't want to under-rate it. It is a beautiful church if you haven't seen a zillion of them. If you have not, then I would certainly stop in for a quick prayer. Women are expected to wear something on their heads. They have scarfs in a basket by the door. My tattoos were showing and I felt it may have been a bit inappropriate. Just my opinion.

This church is quite far from the town centre but if you combine the visit with other monuments (SS. Annunziata, Santa Maria del Quartiere, Ducal Gardens), it should be a nice walk. The three churches you can visit during this walk has something in common what can tell you something more general about the sacral architecture in Parma. Santa Maria del Quartiere and Santa Croce have cupolas covered with frescoes, obviously inspired by Correggio's frescoes in San Giovanni Evangelista and in the Cathedral. The quality is, of course, inferior. Santa Croce is a mixture of a very well preserved romanesque structure with Renaissance elements.

It's the oldest church of the itinerary.

Unlike in other churches, I haven't found any paybox for illumination.
