“it is really a nice place for a spot of lunch”

Pizzale di Castello on top of the low hill is worth a visit; it is mostly quiet and has a nice view. Sometimes (unfortunately not often), a bus, free of charge, can bring you to the top. Bus stop at the bottom of the road uphill. Casa della Contadinanza, situated on one side of the Piazza, offers a limited menu, consisting of delicious local produce. Casa della Contadinaza is for us a favorite to have a quiet and delicious lunch, at the outdoor tables. Service is polite and hospitable; prices are a bit elevated, but the food and experience is worth the money.

The lunch, prepared with local produce we had some months ago, was so good, that we decided, when again in Udine, to climb the hill to the Castello again, to have a plate of the finest sliced salami, cheese and prosciutto at the Casa della Contadinanza. What I wanted to point out is not the terrific lunch, but the fanaticism about food at the Casa della Contadinanza, that is remarkable, even for the food fanatics in Italy. At the counter, where the food is prepared, I spotted an original heritage Berkel manually operated meat slicer. I must add, that in a shop in Udine, the same type of meat slicer was on sale for € 5400,--! A common electrically operated meat slicer costs a tenth of this price. Talking about perfection.

After arriving on Piazzale di Castello and approaching the Casa della Contadinanza, outside restaurant tables are beckoning for ordering a refreshment. It appears that on the ground floor of Casa della Contadinanza a restaurant is situated, called Gastronomica Friulana. The lunch menu is simple, and the wine list is extensive. As it was glorious weather, and already lunch time, we let us spoil by the staff with delicious local meat and cheese and wine. Entertainment was derived from the street life on the Piazzale and the building of stalls by work men for an approaching celebration. A splendid time was had by us.

On the top of Udine Hill. The view from there toward the Friuli mountains is impressive but the Casa (House) is a non extraordinary reconstruction of the XX century of an old building originally in town. Inside there is a restaurant serving regional foods at resonably price.
There is no public transport to the hill and you have to walk for about 500-700 meters to reac the top of the hill.
Near the Casa della Contadinanza there is the "castle" of Udine, ancient residence of the lieutenent of Venice and a present museum of arts and hystory of the city
