Of the 6 hotels I stayed at during my recent tour of northern Italy, the Lido Palace was my clear favorite. The location is stunning, right across the street from the beach. The area surrounding the hotel is full of stores and restaurants. We found the most wonderful bakery a few blocks from the hotel; I'm not sure I remember the name, but from checking Google Street View I think it may be called "Pestarino" in the Via Palestro; if it has beautiful miniature pies with apples or vanilla cream or pine nuts in the window, then that's the place!

Others have mentioned the room configuration, which I really liked: sitting room at the front, bathroom in the middle, bedroom at the rear, with large windows in both the front and the rear. Very spacious! Some rooms have small balconies in the front overlooking the beach. This was the one hotel that offered conditioner and hand lotion in addition to soap and shampoo; and the toiletries had a refreshing grapefruit scent.

Next to the tourist information center 2 blocks from the hotel you can catch the public bus to Portofino (about a 15 minute ride); on the return trip, the bus stops right opposite the hotel. The round-trip bus ticket costs 5 euros.

Other reviews have pointed out that this hotel may not be ideal for persons with mobility issues, because there are steps to get to the room and steps between the bathroom and the adjoining rooms. This is a very fair comment. For those with no such concerns, however, the Lido Palace should be a complete delight, and I recommend it highly!

Rooms are really suites and provide plenty of space. Our view was nothing short of spectacular and throughly enjoyed looking at the beach/shoreline/coast/sea every morning and evening we were there. Location was perfect, facing the sea and within walking distance to shopping, various piazzas and streets that make up the city. Staff were extremely friendly and went out of their way to ensure our comfort. We had an excellent visit and could easily live at the hotel.

Nice and pleasant hotel, although a bit dated. The rooms are real large suites and consists of an upper and lower level rooms. The living rooms overlook the harbor with an amazing view. The rooms are a bit dated but functional. The staff were real nice and helpful. In fact, they went out of their way to help. The breakfast was Ok and very basic. The hotel is about 10 minutes from Portofino and 10 minutes from Rapallo. The only negative about the hotel was the Internet which was not usable. It was so slow that you would give up on the connection.

We were supposed to stay at the Lido palace hotel. We arrived on Friday looking forward to staying across the street from the beach. When we arrived they told they were trying to get in contact with us. No such email was found on either email. As of Tuesday of that week it was fine. They led us to believe they were putting us in a hotel up the street. Sure. It was in the next town. Granted it was a great room. But one large drawback was a 40 euro cab ride st margarita. And 40 euro back. We complained when and they picked up our cab ride first day. That sealed the deal. The next we either had to hike down to st margarita or pay round trip to town of Rapallo. Very inconvenient to stay up on this hill. Just beware that these booking sites can change you when they want.

Out of all the hotels during our 16 trip around Italy this has been my favorite. Hotel sits on the water and service is good. For those with Mobility issues there are a lot of steps, if that is not an issue than I highly recommend the the Lido.

I was quite doubtful about staying here as I read mixed reviews. However, I am extremely happy to have chosen this hotel for a 3 night stay.
The room was huge with an amazing view of the beach; the bathroom had been completely renovated; the staff was very helpful and the location is the best you can get in Santa Margherita.
As it's literally in front of the beach, they give you beach towels which was quite convenient.
If I return to Santa Margherita, I will certainly stay here again!
