“The Perfect Escape”

We are a family of five from Australia, and recently spent 5 nights at Villa dei Fiori in Bellagio. We are not regular posters on Trip Advisor however we were so impressed with our stay at Villa dei Fiori that we felt compelled to write this review.

We have three boys aged 8, 6 and 4 and were looking for some relaxation time in Bellagio after a busy 8 or so nights in London and Paris. We found Villa dei Fiori to be the perfect location for our getaway. It is a very large semi detached 2 storey house with three good sized bedrooms (one of them on the top floor is slightly open, but tucked away enough that the children sleeping there weren't disturbed by what was going on in the rest of the house). The villa is impeccably presented, with beautiful fittings, comfortable furnishings and immaculately clean. The beds were all big and very comfortable, and the kitchen and bathrooms all new, clean and functional. The yard was a godsend - our boys loved having some space and grass to run around on, and the view over the lake stunning. A lovely Italian couple live in the other half of the house, and while we were worried at times about the noise our boys were making, the couple kept to themselves and we were never made to feel uneasy about the noise. The villa was cleaned and restocked daily with fresh towels etc which was a big bonus and not always standard with apartment rentals.

Luca, the owner, met us there when we arrived and showed us around. He had provided more supplies than we could get through in our 5 days, including amongst other things, champagne, fresh fruit, pasta and a nespresso machine. Luca is very friendly and very professional - nothing was too much trouble for him and he went out of his way to make sure our stay was perfect.

The Villa is a short walk to the main streets of Bellagio - 10 minutes along a road or around 15 minutes through a small village called Pescalo and along a gorgeous walled path which was an adventure in itself for the boys. There are a lot of steps this way, so it could be tiring for some (or after doing it a few times in one day). While some might prefer to stay closer to the action, we didn't mind the walk and the benefits of having all the space at Villa dei Fiori far outweighed any downside of the distance.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience and we thoroughly recommend Villa dei Fiori to anyone looking for some space and relaxation time.

“Villa dei Fiori – Exceeded our (high) expectations”

Villa dei Fiori – Exceeded our (high) expectations

A. Background

We were looking to find a hotel or villa in or nearby Bellagio that would accommodate us and our school age children. We are from Montreal, Canada and while we enjoy Europe, it can sometimes be difficult to find accommodation that meets my requirements (and wishes) in terms of features and amenities. Essential requirements are AC and Wi-Fi – which narrowed down our list quite considerably in Bellagio.

B. The owner

Luca is a businessman and he understands customer service. I say this because we have rented houses before from unsophisticated owners who had no contracts and clearly had no prior real estate/business experience, or where the description of the house/amenities and the actual house had annoying discrepancies. With Luca and Mary, everything was well organized and according to plan (I wondered if Luca was German! but he clearly is Italian). He was there to meet with us at the agreed upon time and he was very friendly. He spent time telling us what is around and where to eat. He left a closet full of food, like pasta, canned tuna, biscotti, jam, etc., and even a complimentary bottle of wine. The fridge had milk and champagne and the day after our arrival, the cleaning lady delivered bread. There was a Krups Nespresso-like coffee machine. Luca also showed us where he hides his hard liquor and told us to help ourselves. I must confess I had a couple of drinks of grappa on the patio in the evening looking at the scenery - pretty much no bugs for those who care. There is a grocery store a short walk away or 2 minutes by car where you can stock up. Also, the bathrooms are stocked with nice soap and shampoo, razors, etc. in individual packages like at an upscale hotel. We also got daily maid service and, apart from room service, we felt like we had a suite at an upscale hotel, but with privacy, quietness, and probably views that you could not match at any of the upscale hotels we looked at in Bellagio before booking Villa dei Fiori.

C. The villa

The villa is one of 2 apartments in a duplex (the apartments are side by side) that probably dates back 50 years or so but has been completely tastefully renovated. Everything felt modern: kitchen, bathrooms, soundproof windows, and new wall-mounted AC units that are silent. The wooden floors look great. The beds were comfortable - this is often an issue when renting a house, but not here. Basically, it pretty much feels like a new house with plenty of closet space. There are 2 closed bedrooms (one on each level) and a loft upstairs (2nd level) next to the master bedroom that we used as a third bedroom. The Wi-Fi worked perfectly and the villa has satellite TV with multiple channels for children like Disney, etc. There is a washer and dryer in the modern basement which we used a number of times. We did not have to buy detergent as Luca provided it.

On the first level, there is direct access to the backyard patio with an outdoor dining table, lawn chairs and a charcoal BBQ that we did not use. From there, you enjoy a great view of the mountains (I estimate that you are no more than 100m, probably less, from the lakeshore). Because of the hedge and trees, it is very private; no one can see you from the street. The 2nd level patio is wide enough that you can enjoy a drink there. From there, you can see both the lake and mountain. The only thing between the villa and the lake is a small road (which had very little traffic as it becomes a dead end) hidden by the villa’s hedge and some sort of greenhouse on the other side of the road (between the road and the lake). It was very quiet. While the yard was not big by American standards, it was big enough for our children to play and run around, so it was an added bonus. The attached neighbors were very quiet and discreet; it felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. Parking was provided (coming from North America, we found it a bit tight, but I am sure that many Europeans would say there was plenty of space!) and the entrance is gated and opened by remote control.

D. Nearby

While the villa does not have a pool, you are a 5-7 minute walk away from the Bellagio Sporting Clubs. For a fee (it cost us about 20 Euros for the day) we could swim there or play tennis. There is a restaurant on site. I could watch the kids swim and admire the scenery (mountains) in the background while drinking wine – it was great! From the villa, you are a 5-minute walk away from Pescallo, a tiny fishing village on your way to Bellagio that has one restaurant on the lake. You can walk to Bellagio in about 10-15 minutes from the villa. The path goes uphill before going downhill and feels like a maze as it is walled. The kids enjoyed going up and down in the “maze” but if you have a stroller, this would obviously be challenging. You can also drive and park in Bellagio – it takes about 4-5 minutes. The vegetation around Bellagio is lush and the surrounding beautiful. Based on what we have seen during the trip, we did the right choice in selecting Bellagio as it a central location and you get a direct ferry ride to many other villages/destinations nearby. Bellagio also has the most restaurant and shopping options (including a great wine shop with super Tuscans I had never seen before), including gelato, which is a great way to motivate your kids to get there on foot. We found the villa to be ideally located for our needs: a lot of space, great views, quietness, near the action in Bellagio, but not in the action.

E. Conclusion

I am a demanding traveller who often stays at the Ritz and the Four Seasons of the world and I was extremely satisfied with my stay. If you are going to stay in Bellagio with children, Villa dei Fiori is a compelling choice!

“Beautiful villa”

Six of us have just left this beautiful villa. It was absolutely magnificent. Spotlessly clean, daily maid service. The gardens are magnificent. The views to die for. Luca the owner was wonderful. When we arrived we had beer, wine, bread, pasta etc etc in fridge and pantry. Bread and milk re stocked daily. A 15 minutes stroll into beautiful Bellagio. A steep walk home but a little train runs every 20 minutes from near the ferry to the street above the villa. I suggest you catch it. The belvedere Hotel is a five minute walk away and the restaurant is gorgeous. I can thoroughly recommend this beautiful villa.

“Idyllic Pescallo”
Reviewed June 21, 2013 for a stay in June 2013

As two couples seeking to explore some of the famous Italian gardens of Lake Como we are delighted that we chose to stay at Villa dei Fiore. It was just as described: peaceful location looking across the quietest part of the lake; very comfortable and well equipped for self-catering, but also close to a beautiful restaurant at the water’s edge in Pescallo; and Luca and his team friendly, generous, and helpful.
Bellagio is the hub of the ferry system on Lake Como. If you can manage the short walk from Pescallo to Bellagio you can enjoy the surrounding villages, villas and gardens without needing a car. We particularly liked the Villa Meltzi gardens in Bellagio, Villa Carlotta on the opposite shore, and the traffic free village and villa gardens at Varenna.
To transfer from Milan Nord or Malpensa airport you can take a Trenord train to Como Nord Lago station which is close to the ferry for Bellagio. But be aware of the gap in the return ferry departures from Bellagio between 08.15 and 11.30 – plenty of time for a last coffee on the waterfront.
