“Bad reviews unjustified”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2009

I can see that the switching off of air-conditioning in the hot summer months would be a serious problem, but we went in late September and so it was not an issue.

That said, it is a pleasant little family run hotel.
It very much caters to Italian visitors and for a week we were the only non-Italians in the place. We rather liked the feeling of being in the non-tourists' Italy. Our fellow guests seemed very pleasant. For that week, the menu was not translated and we and the waitresses had quite a lot of fun as we decided what to choose.
It helped that although our Italian is not brilliant, we have enough knowledge of the language to get by.
Some items in the menu would not appeal to a very conservative British or American palate having such items as horse, octopus, cured but uncooked meat etc., but there were plenty of other good items to choose from.
Breakfast was continental but plentiful with a wide choice.
I suppose that some of our plus points would be minus points for some people, but I would certainly not agree with some of the very unkind comments I have read here.

I recommend to stay away from this hotel. When I called the hotel to make a reservation I asked if they had A/C. They did NOT tell me that they switch it OFF from midnight to mid day - just when you need it for sleeping so at night it was 30 degrees in the room and impossible to sleep. Nor did they tell me that they close the reception and lock the door at 23pm so when I got back at just gone midnight I could not get in. The door bell to the night guard did not work either and I spent 20 minutes banging on the door. Finally I had to call a directory service back home in Norway to get the number to the hotel and that way managed to get hold of the night guard!
Next day I checked out and complained and said I refused to pay the full price as I had not gotten what I was paying for. The woman behind the reception would not even go in to any negotiation, got furious and actually called the police! I finally got them to agree on giving me a small rebate!
In addition most of the staff were not helpful and the breakfast was bad.

We moved across the street 50 meters down the road to a hotel that would recommend of all my heart. It is called Hotel Serenella and the owner must be the nicest guy in Italy (and fluent in english), 24hr A/C and a really good breakfast and nice rooms.

Hope this helps you to make the right choice.

David from Norway

This Hotel has a good location on Sirmione. Read carefully the particulars of the Hotel as the aircondition switches off from mid-night to mid-day!! in the heat of August. The breakfast is dry with lots of flies and no fans either. The room smelt sweaty and not clean, Poor service , the bar has limited cold drinks and the small pool has no changing facility.

a very clean reasonable 3 star hotel, decor a little dated, but if you want the ritz you should expect to pay ritz prices,no good for those wanting roast beef and yorkshire pudding, but if you want to mix with the italian people and experience proper italian cuisine this is perfect, we never had a bad meal in two weeks, and the meals included calamaris, perch, trout, and beef and veal steaks all cooked in the italian style.the hotel has a brand new swimming pool which is super and the service excellent from the owners to the room maids,The owners even eat daily with the guests to ensure the standard of cuisine produced by the chef is up to standard, and when we had difficulty in changing travellers cheques the senora phoned all around to find a bank that would do so , of general interest to anybody wishing to change travellers cheques in Sirmione, there is only one place and that is the Banco Populare of verona, just on the corner of the square as you enter the town through the 13th century scala castle ,the hotel has a superb location and is only a few minutes walk from the town centre in a peaceful area away from the crowds and is only a short walk from the extensive roman ruins or you can take the land train costing 1 euro.

  • Liked — clean,great location,great local food and wines
  • Disliked — decor needs updating

After a delightful stay in Venice the 2nd week of our holiday was in the Hotel Desiree in Sirmione & all I can say in NEVER stay at this hotel. It looks ok when you walk into the dated reception, but when you take the extremely slow lift or the stairs to you room the true horror of this fleapit hit you full in he nostrils as the 1970's style carpet literally stinks. Then when you get to your room (Our wasn't one with a lake view) it was like taking a trip back to the 1970's with again carpeted walls , a bathroom that would not be out of place in a prison & a phone which looked like the one noel Edmunds had on swapshop. As mentioned in another review the air con went off at 12 midnight and as it was early august the heat and the smell was overpowering and opening the windows did little to help. When we asked the manager why the air con went off at this time she said it was because it kept the elderly guests awake at night (Like the heat and smell didn't). It was only after we got our Inghams rep to complain that a fan promised by the manager appeared in our room but this was less than useless as it just re-circulated to hot air.

The food was very very basic and nothing like what we had had in Venice or in the restaurants in Sirmione and was greasy, plain and often cold.

After 2 nights we had had enough & checked out and went down the road to the wonderful hotel catioulo (Which I highly recommend).

In summing up again all I can say is:

WARNING NEVER STAY AT THIS HOTEL

As you will be wasting your hard earned money and if one person reads this and books into another hotel in Sirmione (Which is a lovely little town and well worth a visit) then I done my job.

We spent 10 nights here on our honeymoon. The location is fantastic. We had a room with a balcony over looking the lake which although was a little impersonal, it served its purpose. The hotel was full of mostly Italian Guests which was nice and the staff very helpful when needed. Rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable. The swimming pool is beautiful - very private clean and we seemed to have the pool to our selves for most of the stay !
The only negative point is the breakfast. This was rather predictable towards the end of the stay due to the standard European “continental breakfast”. We ate out every night and would highly recommend Restaurant La Fiasca.
Overall, a great holiday/hotel but a lot does depend on your expectations of what a 3 star should offer!

We stayed at the beginning of July - and knowing the weather could be hot, checked with Inghams as to whether the air conditioning would be on 24 hours a day and were told yes. Just after midnight on night one I awoke to find no a/c, a stifling hot and airless room. At breakfast we were bluntly told that the a/c was only on from noon to midnight and nothing could be changed. Inghams arranged a fan - but not as good as a/c.
The swimming pool was new and very good, nice loungers but NO umbrellas and one was not allowed to put your lounger on the grass under the shade of a tree. In fact I was told off for walking on the grass! The Inghams rep arranged for us to swim at the next door hotel- but not what we had come for.
The food was very basic, the owner and his wife were not exactly customer friendly.
The free afternoon tea and biscuits were only forthcoming on day 1.
Hotel situation was excellent and v quiet. Easily accessible to the town. Hotel rooms were very clean but basic. There was no privacy between balconies.
