Whilst my room was fine and had been renovated (though being on the first floor it was a bit noisy if one had the window open at night), my main bugbear was that the hotel would not allow one to pay for all drinks at the end of the trip. It was necessary to pay in cash for drinks at the bar and in the restaurant and at 4 euros for a cup of tea (hot water and a teabag and a small biscuit!) one rapidly ran out of cash and had to pay a visit to the hole in the wall for more money. Having said that the hotel is well situated for catching the lake ferries to all the lovely gardens on the islands and around the lake.

Room Tip: Third floor if you can get one there. Some rooms have lovely views over the lake.

Enjoyed a week here with Travelsphere. Room small but perfectly adequate and spotlessly clean. Hotel décor very new, light and airy. Wonderful position on the lakeside, just a few minutes from shops, restaurants and harbour where you can pick up ferries to travel around the lake. Really lovely pool set in gardens, but beware of the mosquitoes! Very friendly staff and food OK.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony and lake view. Although lake view rooms overlook road, it is not at all...

This is my 5th time to Italy and my 4th time on a Shearings trip, usually you don't know who has travelled with which company until you visit this hotel. Shearings clients were all based in the 'back room' when dining. I can only say that the food was inferior to the other companies, we were not allowed in the other room and the people who had travelled with Thomson and other companies who had the seats overlooking the lake were told that and I quote by the staff 'No this is not for you the better food is in the other room.' There was some salad and I joke not that it was 3 or 4 bowls of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and a bowl of oil people were queuing up for this! The fruit in a morning for example apples I would not have even fed to a horse. I do not know if Shearings are aware of this second class citizenship for their customers but it does leave a bitter taste. The room well I have seen the comment about Harry Potter and I think we had that room. Basically there was two cupboards which passed as a wardrobe now I am 5ft 2in and I had to duck to get into them. There was a small table which should have been used as firewood two single beds pushed together again I can relate to the reviewer about torture as I didn't sleep well a park bench would have been more comfortable. The bathroom had no light only a shaver light. The only thing that saved this review from getting 2 stars was the balcony on that we had 2 sunbeds and a small table. Another small table and 2 chairs in fact more furniture on the balcony than the room. On the first night when we went for our evening meal it was either pasta or soup, the waiter splashed the soup on the cloth and over my husbands hand. The main meal was a disgrace we basically had a chicken leg put in front of us. Meals did slighty improve over the week, dessert now come on this is Italy was best I can compare it to was Asda smartprice icecream this was approximately 5 out of 7 nights. There is no entertainment at the hotel which in a way is a shame there is a piano and some drinks are cheaper than in the bars but basically after evening meal it was dead. Can strongly recommend bar across the road from the boats, an Italian lady who used to live in England did arrange a singer for 3 evenings while we were there. Wifi poor we were on third floor and very often didn't work until we went near reception. There was a nice gentleman on reception the first night who helped us to log in to the internet. Pav coach driver was very good and knowledgeable and the trips were good. Found the manager of the restaurant not a very sociable person. On the whole Baveno is a nice place, scenery lovely and thank you to the reviewer who mentioned about mosquitoes as I took some repellent and was only bite once. Would I recommend the hotel no, in fact if this was my first trip to Italy would probably not return. I have heard some rooms are like in the pictures so maybe starting from the bottom and working up. It is a shame as it is in such a lovely position it could be a really lovely place to visit but the rooms and dining experience are not pleasant- especially if you have booked with Shearings.

Just returned from a lovely week at this hotel. Room sparse, bathroom small. Really needs updating. However, it was a lake view room with a lovely balcony which made up for it. The dining room and bar staff were very friendly and attentive. Top marks to Maria who never seemed to stop. The reception staff were OK if you spoke to them first. Lounges and dining room good and spotless. Food average but nicely cooked. Swimming pool good but a bit cold again, very clean surroundings and located in the gardens. Overall a traditional old style Italian hotel in a fantastic location on the lakeside. I would return again and I do recommend it.

Room Tip: Room 206 lake view with balcony

We were here a week on a Shearings holiday. Note that rooms do not have ironing or tea making facilities and whilst we had a fridge some rooms did not. The room was a little on the small side although the lake view from french windows more than made up for this and the shower was spacious and easy to use. The beds were on the small side - two bunk sized singles pushed together but separately made up. The mattresses were on the hard side although this suited us and we slept well. Air con with remote control was very effective and there were shutters on the double glazed windows that did a good job of shutting out the road noise, although overnight it was quiet until about 6.30 am. The room tv has BBC world and CNN in English but we managed to watch the grand prix on Italian station
The public rooms were excellent with lots of choice of seating and cool areas if you wanted. Food was generally good and plentiful although, as others have mentioned, at dinner you could expect soup or pasta as a starter and ice cream generally as sweet. That said all was well presented and cooked (particularly the fish which was wonderful) and served with a smile by the excellent staff who speak English and manage to maintain a sense of humour. If you have a problem with any of the menu they are more than willing to discuss and will try to come up with an alternative idea. Breakfast was continental buffet with toast and boiled egg if required.
Drinks were not too expensive.
The pool was great - lots of sunbeds and deep enough. There is even a 'jacuzzi' spot in one corner. There is a small changing hut if you require and the attendant supplies large fluffy pool towels if you get a ticket from reception (deposit is Eu10 per towel). You return the towel so no wet stuff in your room (excellent). The room safe also requires a Eu10 deposit.
Clientele are mainly on coach trips - during our stay there were French, Dutch and German as well as some Italians.
Location is ideal for the local bus service, lake trips or use of the lake ferries and there is a friendly 'brit bar' near the boats where we had entertainment with an EU feel and learnt to sing along in Italian. There is also a small travel agency where staff speak English if you need help arranging anything and also work in conjunction with Shearings. Overall a good hotel in a beautiful spot which hubby gave 10/10 and where we talked about when we come back rather than if.

Room Tip: Some garden rooms have sit out balcony but we loved our lake view

We spent 3 nights here in August and it's a lovely hotel - with imperfections. It was excellent value and I'd certainly have no problem staying here again.

The hotel is nicely located on the lakefront (though we had a rear facing room). The staff are very friendly and helpful - especially on reception. Our room was first floor and was impeccably clean and pretty modern. The corridors however all seemed a bit "tired" and had some odd display cases - one had a selection of British tea containers and another with some (dusty) toy cars. We always used the stairs, but worth noting that if you're of impaired mobility there is only one lift.

There is a lovely bar and lounge area - that has plenty of books (in case you run out) as well as games and jigsaws. Beyond that is the restaurant - and if you get lucky you could have a lake facing table. We were B&B so didn't eat there in the evening, but breakfast was a good selection - meats/cheese, cereals, yoghurt, bread, pastries, bacon and there is an egg boiler (which can get a bit busy at times). You can have a selection of tea, coffee, chocolate and fruit juices - one small gripe is that the coffee was delivered just warm on two of the mornings. I suspect it was pre-made and put into pots ready for delivery to the tables.

There is a very nice pool, which was crystal clear, spotlessly clean - and a little chilly! There are a fair few sunbeds and we didn't have a problem finding free ones - but I suspect like with most hotel pools there are peak times where you could struggle. You have to walk through a very cold shower to get to the pool also. There is a very nice lifeguard on duty who provides you with towels - though you first need to pay a 10 EUR deposit per towel at reception and you'll get given a token for these. You can either give the towel back to the lifeguard and get your token back each day, of keep the towel for the next day. There is a drinks vending machine by the pool but no bar - however you can go to reception or the bar and order drinks which the lifeguard will bring to the poolside.

The hotel has a car park along the side and round the back with perhaps 20 spaces. There is an overflow car park also, but we always managed to find a spot in the main car park.

There are a selection of restaurants opposite on the promenade and more into town. Obviously the waterside ones are typically more touristy and there are big differences in quality. Stresa is 2km up the road and much bigger so offers a wider range of eateries and is a lot livelier. You can travel between the two by ferry (10 mins) which stops at the islands of Isola Bella and Isola Pescatori en-route. The former has a palace and gardens (entry fee) and was very busy when we went. Pescatori has some very nice restaurants (which we didn't visit - but by reputation).

In Baveno there is a private beach which you can pay to use and a public one which is actually very nice. We used it once when it was a little overcast so was almost empty. One thing we found generally is there are very few bathing spots on the lake and those that there are (public and private) were absolutely packed. Also parking near the lake can be a real issue. It is however worth noting that we happened to be there for a bank holiday weekend so I guess it's not normally quite this bad. This said we were told that many Italians rent a holiday apartment on the lakes for the entire summer. Mums and kids spend the summer there and the dads work the week and head there for the weekend - so perhaps it is always this busy in August!

I stayed here as part of a Shearings holiday just over a week ago. Our flight was delayed, so by the time we arrived, it was early hours of the morning. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the staff at the hotel had left us each a small supper of bread, mozzarella and fresh tomatoes with bottles of cold water in our rooms. This was very much appreciated.
We had paid a little extra to get a room with a balcony and view of the lake - it was worth it. Amazing views over the lake. I managed to get some great pics. Our room was very clean, we had a fridge and safe, with fresh clean towels. If i'm honest, it was quite compact and oddly shaped, but considering the amount of time we actually spent in there, it did the job for us.
All of the staff we came across were brilliant. They were all very friendly and helpful. One of the guys suggested we wander up to the local festival. We were the only tourists there, but it was great fun. Although my Italian is VERY limited, we managed to make ourselves understood. The locals welcomed us and even attempted to show us some dance steps. The less said about our moves the better!!
Breakfast at the hotel was very good. There was ample choice with pastries, ham, cheese, croissants, toast fruit and yoghurt (the usual stuff). It was all fresh and replenished regularly. Tables were always set nicely and the waiters would bring tea/coffee, sometimes before we'd even sat down. Very efficient and friendly.
Our evening meal was 3 courses - it was simple food, (fish/meat, potato and vegetables as a main); some people on our trip were disappointed with it, but to be honest, we never left the table hungry and we enjoyed most of our meals.
We used the swimming pool a few times. It was excellent. There was a life guard on duty, providing towels and even finding a couple of extra beds when needed - a very relaxed atmosphere.
Check out is around 10am on the last day, which was a bit early for us as our flight was not until 5pm. The hotel offered a storage room for our suitcases and we were able to use the excellent showers and changing rooms in the garden area. Towels and shower gels were available for us - a very nice touch, thank you.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a room with a view of the lake
