Recently returned from a week's stay at the Bristol, having booked through Thomsons. We had two rooms in the annexe building, reached by the quirky horizontal lift or, if you prefer, by a longish wide corridor. You then arrive at a largish area which leads to the large indoor pool and the gym. A conventional lift then takes you up to the rooms in the annexe. No problems with the rooms - adequate hanging space, a couple of power sockets for charging phones, cameras etc. And efficient air conditioning and a very comfortable bed! The hotel does cater for many tour groups and the dining room was split into three separate sections, with the centre section (and hence access to the terrace) reserved for non-tour guests. We ate on the terrace every day, both for breakfast and dinner. It was just beautiful if, like me, you are an early riser, to sit on the terrace at breakfast watching the sun come up over the Lake. Food was plentiful with adequate choices. The restaurant staff in particular were very helpful in advising my sister, who has a dietary problem, which foods on the menu she should avoid. We did most of the sights in and around Stresa - up the cable car and walked back to Stresa from the middle station, the three islands on the Lake and also Lake Orta. Also did the day trip to Zermatt. For those of you who like walking, there is a walk advertised as the Chestnut walk which goes from Stresa to Belgirate. In theory you can walk it either way BUT if you start in Belgirate be warned that you are in for a very, very steep climb at the start!!!! All in all a very enjoyable week and I would certainly choose the Bristol if I return to Stresa.

We have just come back from two weeks in this very good hotel. It is very clean and efficiently run. It has a lovely pool surrounded by a large garden with the usual sun loungers, tables and chairs and kiosk selling food and drinks. The reception staff are excellent, speak very good English. We had a few personal issues which they dealt with very quickly. The only downside was dinner in the evening. We ate in the hotel our first night. It was a four course meal with very little choice an the food was mediocre. At 36 euros per person without drinks it was very expensive, There are lots of places to eat in and around Strese. Daniel's is very good just a short walk from the hotel and La Piazzetta in the main square is also good.

Room Tip: High up with lakeside view

The Grand Hotel Bristol, Stresa.
On several occasions we have stayed in Baveno at our favourite hotel on Lake Maggiore, The Simplon, but this year decided it would be nice to stay at a bigger resort and therefore I chose this hotel in Stresa as it is run by the same group, Zacchara, and we hoped it would be up to the same standard.
We were staying half board for seven nights and had paid extra for a lake view. Our twin room on the second floor was very comfortable and quite spacious, providing a small settee and two arm chairs for comfortable seating. There was a small balcony giving a beautiful side view of the lake, hotel garden and pool area. The general cleanliness of the hotel was very good: our room was cleaned every day to a very high standard. The air-conditioning worked very well but the lighting system was not satifactory. Once in bed all lights are operated by touching the relevant symbol by the side of the bed - great if you can see them, but should you require to put on the bedside light in the middle of the night you cannot see the symbols to see which one to push…stupid and potentially dangerous for the elderly when needing a light in a hurry. (Take a torch with you.)
The food was good with quite a good selection, especially with the deserts, although a little repetitive and it included a lot of fish. It would have been nice to have had the choice of some of the many wonderful pasta dishes that Italy is famous for. On two occasions the evening meal was all buffet style which did provide some hot food and fresh cooked desserts, but once again most cold dishes contained some type of fish. Not all people can eat fish so an alternative would have been appreciated. The option of dining out on the terrace overlooking the lake was very pleasant.
The bar area was comfortable to sit in and provided music most nights, or one could sit in the conservatory. This hotel does have several very comfortable indoor seating areas, more than most, which are much appreciated should the weather be inclement. The outdoor pool and gardens are very attractive and well looked after with plenty of sunbeds, comfortable seating and shaded areas. There is also a poolside bar which provides food and drink which once ordered is brought to you.
We did not use the indoor pool but it looked very attractive. The staff were helpful and quite friendly.
The hotel is within close walking distance to the town and ferry station.
We had a very enjoyable holiday and would certainly stay at this hotel again, but in our opinion even with its beautiful lakeside view it does not quite match up to the quality of the food, the exceptional cleanliness and genuine friendliness of the staff at the hotel in Baveno.

Room Tip: Side lake view overlooking garden and pool.

Fantastic hotel by the lake with fantastic views over the lake and/or the pool if you have the chance to have a balcony! The rooms aren't particularly big but you pay for the view! The breakfast was good quality and plenty of choice for an italian hotel! But the best is certainly the outside; the pool and the gardens are amazing. Nice to have a bar by the pool and they also serve food outside. Worth a visit!

Room Tip: Avoid the 6th floor: no balcony!
