Balcony style room

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Oct 11, 2024
A typical but very nice European hotel. We had a deluxe room and it was pretty small, but the view from the balcony was amazing. Location was a small walk from the main strip of restaurants but it was nice to get out and walk around. This place would be amazing in the summer as the pool area with lounge chairs are available to use.

We were with a garden tour group. Yes, we were shoved in the dreaded back rooms which are accessed by the carpeted ski slope tunnel decorated with tired silk flowers and Nonna's artwork.

The room was overstuffed with furniture. The furniture was also probably Nonna's and there was plenty of it. One of our party demanded that they remove some chairs just so she could move around. We had to place white hand towels on chair arms so that we didn't trip over in the night.

We were "treated" to a welcome dinner at the restaurant. Afterwards we were informed that our our tour farewell dinner would also be there. Revolution ensued. It was elsewhere.

The buffet breakfast was OK. But we were told that we had to sit with our tour group. Not at an individual table. We were obviously in Economy class, definitely not Business.

The beds had what seemed like a rubber sheet underneath, giving the bed a crunchy effect. We swiped some extra towels from the maid's cart, used them as an underlay and that seemed to alleviate the issue a little. I did see a lot of senior guests so I guess that's an issue...

In summary, we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Room tip: Don't go there

I recently stayed at the Grand Hotel Bristol in Stresa, and while there were many positives, a few areas could use improvement. The location is truly stunning, with beautiful views that make for a serene experience. The service was good, and the staff were generally helpful and friendly.

One inconvenience was the lack of irons and ironing boards, which posed a challenge for my colleagues and me. We had to share a travel-sized iron among us, and it would be much more convenient if the hotel provided these standard amenities.

Additionally, the property itself is showing its age. While the charm is there, the hotel could benefit from a restoration, as it feels quite dated and tired in places. Another issue was the presence of spiders on the balconies, which detracted from our ability to fully enjoy this outdoor space.

On the bright side, the breakfast was pleasant, and the staff made the experience enjoyable. Despite the few setbacks, we had a nice stay, but I hope the hotel takes these points into consideration for future improvements.

This hotel places much more emphasis on branding than the customer experience. It is a large hotel focused on the corporate market with some modern developments yet it doesn't have kettle or fridge/mini bar in the room. Hides behind the Covid excuse which is at least a year out of date. The accessibility of the accessible room is poor as it is too cramped. Food very average but fortunately the centre of Stresa with some great restaurants is just a few minutes away.

This review is based on the fact that we immediately coughed up another €180 for 3 days to avoid the horror story that is the rooms at the back of the hotel. I can only imagine the disappointment for those poor residents.

This is a hotel that will wow you from the front, but let you down once you're inside. It's a beautiful old building, that's for sure. Very grand and you can imagine what this place would have been like back in the day.

But now... Now it's a tired old place with hilariously quirky electrics and a feeling that you're being overcharged at every turn.

Like I say, we were so outright horrified with these "rooms at the back" that I called reception and asked what they could do. They very kindly gave me some options for a lake view. €60 a day. As we were only staying for 3 days, I decided to go for it, and I really don't regret that. The views were fantastic. We were able to enjoy a drink on the balcony over the lakes. The staff were fantastic throughout to be honest. Really friendly and a nice atmosphere throughout the hotel.

The breakfast buffet was also superb for us. Not a fan of buffets, but they kept things refilled regularly, and the options were a plenty. You can sit outside too, and enjoy the day... Which we did! There's a good indoor pool there, and very below-average "gym"... If you can call it that!

Outdoor pool looked nice. Astroturf, which upset my wife!

But the place was also riddled with things that left a sour taste. Beer was €10 for a half-litre, and tea was €5. Punchy numbers. Add to that the fact you get a small bottle of water on day one, and that's your lot. No tea/coffee facilities in the room, and it's €5 a day to hire a kettle! WHAT?!?! TV was tiny (not that it really bothered us). I suspect their electrics is straining, which is why they try and keep the wattage down. Quite often we'd press a light switch and it would turn on different lights. Most odd!

It's also quite a stroll to the shops and restaurants. We don't mind a stroll, but it's a lengthy 15 minutes to get close to anything.

I hope they take a hard look at things there. It needs a rethink. It's just not as grand as it thinks it is. Not right now anyway.

Room tip: Book a lakeside room. Do NOT think you are going to get a decent room otherwise!

This is a large imposing hotel from the street with lovely gardens and pool. Unfortunately it falls apart when you enter your room. We had a tint double room at the back of the hotel - so small in fact that we had to place a chair from the room onto the balcony to be able to get into bed. Bathroom was small and very average. Breakfast in the enormous dining room had a good selection but very average quality. Many, many tour groups. We had one dinner and again just okay. Much better options available in Stresa

Room tip: Make sure to book room with lake view ie front of hotel and check size before reserving
