Review of Palazzo Mezzanotte

Palazzo Mezzanotte
Reviewed July 22, 2015

If you are around, it is worth a visit. I like to come here in the evening, when the stock exchange (hosted in the building) closes and the offices around are empty. There's an unnatural calm, considering that it's 3 minutes from Piazza Duomo and the crowded areas of Milan.

But the real "diamond" is the sculpture "L.O.V.E." from Cattelan in the middle of the square. L.O.V.E. is the acronym of Freedom, Hate, Revenge, Eternity (in Italian) and the hand without its finger (except the medium one) represents the fascist salutation. To be considered that Palazzo Mezzanotte is an example of fascist architecture...

We came upon this piazza in Milan completely by accident, but were intrigued and delighted by it. The Palazzo Mezzonotte is an obviously Fascist-era building dominating the piazza. And right in front is a giant hand in an unmistakeably vulgar gesture. Google "finger sculpture Milan" to get the back story. Meantime, enjoy the juxtaposition; it's free.
