Traditional style hotel with attentive staff.Set on the outskirts of town with super views across the countryside and a 20 min walk into Merano. The hotel is far cheaper than the in town hotels and it's a good base if you are put off by the other hotel prices. The food is more German than Italian as is the town of Merano, so the Italian flare is missing. The breakfast buffet is quite limited but ok and the evening dining times are quite precise as you are more or less expected to be sitting in the restaurant before service starts. There is a certain control aspect about how the hotel is run and can take some getting used to. It is obvious that people who return there love the hotel and the owners. They enjoy spending evenings around the hotel as the sitting out areas are going by the patio and pool. Its prices for drinks are good and inexpensive and the weekly buffet is also worth a mention as it extends out into the hotel foyer and its range if food is a pleasant surprise. Don't expect posh so it won't suit some people but there's nothing wrong with the hotel so it's really a 3 star plus.

A wonderful base for a merano visit.
Edge of town location gives you a pleasant fifteen minute stroll into the centre.
Food is good and varied.
Alfred is a great host...helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.
Sitting on the patio overlooking the pool and mountains beyond is sheer pleasure.
It's basic in comparison with the more upmarket hotels in Merano, but that reflects in the price differences.
We had a wonderful time again and will be back next year....again...

Room Tip: Always, always ask for a balcony room overlooking the pool.....e mail them directly

This is a good, basic, hotel in a quiet location on the edge of town. Alfred, the owner, speaks English and was generally helpful - despite a few 'Basil Fawlty' outbursts which we put down to him being tired after a long season. The staff were also friendly and helpful and the rooms were clean and tidy.

The house wine was excellent value. However, I can't agree with other reviewers about the quality of the food. We've been eating 'mountain food' - in resorts throughout Europe - for over 30 years and found the food to be of a very basic standard. OK there was generally plenty of it but I'd have to say it felt like we'd been transported back in time - to the early 70s - when a piece of, overcooked, poached salmon was passed off as posh nosh.

Now Merano is the centre of Italy's apple growing region...so you'd expect fresh apple juice and lots of apple-based sweets. We were offered some cheap tropical fruit juice for breakfast and the regular apple dish can't have stretched the chef - as it was simply a whole unpeeled apple on a plate! What a pity they don't make more of the wonderful fruit on their doorstep!

One interesting evening ritual - which bemused us - was the placing of hot plates before diners immediately after they'd finishing their starter. Nothing strange there, you may think. However, only when ALL the diners had finished their previous course was hot food brought out - resulting in the majority of diners having cold plates when the hot food was finally served...

As a budget hotel Salgart is fine. The bedrooms are a good size and we had a balcony (which unfortunately overlooked the car park). We didn't use the pool facilities but they appeared well kept. The hotel's about a 10 minute walk from the town centre and about the same distance from the magnificent Trauttmandorff Gardens. If you haven't visited this part of Italy before just be aware that you need to take the right phrase book with you - as the principal spoken language is German.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the swimming pool

disappointing room in as much we were in 111 over looking the car park and a apartment block. feel as though we paid more than necessary but you don't know till you arrive. having said that it didn't impact on our stay. the room was clean and comfortable. all the staff were the friendliest we have come across in along while. the location was ideal for us, away from the town centre, immaculate gardens and swimming pool.

Room Tip: book early. to ensure get a room with mountain view. or stress a room at the front.

Our second time at the Salgart -we were last here 2 years ago - and again we stayed for 2 weeks. The welcome was very friendly, Alfredo is always very welcoming and very happy to provide lots of information on Merano and the surrounding area. The location of the hotel is out of town but it's a very pleasant flat walk into the centre of Merano.
We had a room on the second floor overlooking the pool and also a lovely view. This side of the hotel faces south and so the balcony did get very hot at times. The room was comfortable and clean, as was the bathroom which had a bath with shower over.
The food was excellent with enough at breakfast to set you up for the day, typical continental with some cereals, bread, rolls, cheeses and cold meats, boiled eggs.
Dinners varied, most nights with huge salad buffet, a choice of starters and mains which you chose in the morning. This time we had one barbecue evening meal which was lovely and it was great to be able to eat it outside. We also had another meal each week which consisted of hot and cold buffet food. This didn't work well though. We had to sit at table to be served a starter, then help ourselves to the hot and cold food buffet food. The hot food had been sitting on the table for at least half an hour by the time we got to it so wasn't very hot at all. To be honest, I'm not sure why they bother with this - a lot of food seemed to be wasted and the meals which we had to order in advance were far superior. I guess it just provides more variety. On another night we had an aperitif and nibbles provided which was a nice touch.
We love Merano and will probably visit again. It's a great destination for walking and has very good transport links. We had a 7 day Merano card which provided free bus and train transport enabling us to get around. We went to Bolzano by train then on the cable car up to Renon, all included on the card. We also went on the Venosta Vally Railway to Glorenza and used the buses to take us to outlying villages which we could walk back from. All in all it was a lovely holiday.
