We stayed at the Meranerhof in September visiting friends who have stayed there every September for decades now. In one word: lovely. Good food, nice ambiance, nice well kept rooms right in the center of Merano AND A WONDERFUL STAFF! Staff really made us feel welcome. The only minus I could come up with is the noise of nearby city traffic, but when you close your room doors this is gone.
Next to this the city of Merano with all its surroundings provided for an excellent holiday.

A very pretty hotel from the colonial era.
The hotel lies across a small one way road to the side of the river and bridge in the centre of Merano. It has its own car park.
The Meranhof has a nice feeling when you walk in with attentive staff.
Our room was a double garden view which was on a corner of the hotel, the balcony gave us views to two sides of the hotel, one with the pretty small garden and the other the bridge and river on the side, which was a little noisier, due to the traffic passing through.
The bedrooms are well equipped with TV, safe, hairdryer, but no kettle.
It was clean and comfy with air conditioning and well soundproofed.
The bathroom was a lovely size with a double basin unit, bath, bidet and shower. There was dressing gowns, slippers and towels for use in the spa.
Breakfast is buffet style, where you can sit inside or out.
The hotel is very well located if you wished to shop or dine out or visit a few bars, all within a short walk over the bridge.
A great base have a car to visit various sites within the mountains.
The staff and family are all very approachable for help and suggestions where to go or what to do.
I would return here in a heartbeat.

Recently stayed for a couple of nights at the hotel.
We had an excellent and very spacious room overlooking the gardens.
Breakfast very good and staff helpful and friendly.
Had one evening meal at the hotel as we arrived late and food was good - but the restaurant appears to offer only fixed menu dinner service.
Location is excellent for easy access to everything in Merano.
It may have been just the time of year we were staying (August) - but sensation was that the hotel caters for older guests looking for an oasis of peace and quiet.

Elegant and photogenic Merano, with rushing mountain river and the promenades with flowering trees and buildings of a 1910 Austrian spa town, has shops for the very rich.
The Meranerhof possibly counts some of these among its guests, but it caters most for normal, civilised people. The staff seem genuinely friendly, the wine list includes some very acceptable wines at reasonable prices, and the comfortable bar served first class espressos and excellent ice-cold slivovitz. The hotel's own website, showing a very well-dressed lady in glittering surroundings, should not deter those who seek quality without fuss. Very few gentlemen wore jackets to the gala dinner, for which jackets or ties were requested. I packed a colourful bow tie, which seemed fine.

We chose the Meranerhof from the Inghams brochure because it had air-conditioning in the rooms, and would not have wanted to be in Merano in July without it, with 31 deg C in the shade at 18.15 on our day of arrival. It was a lucky choice. The room was good, with adequate storage and a bathroom with a super walk-in shower. As old people, we would have liked a higher toilet. The hotel stands on a busy cross-roads, so there is always traffic noise, but with the balcony door shut to keep out the heat, this was no problem. The balcony, with upright as well as deck chairs, was good for sitting after dinner to watch the nightly thunderstorms.

Breakfast cereals, fruit etc. were good, and there was always scrambled egg and good bacon or boiled eggs. Bread was a bit unadventurous for a town with baker's shops, as was the selection of jams and honey, but there were croissants and cakes.

Dinner was very good, with an excellent salad buffet followed by four courses which nearly always had good and interesting tastes as well as reasonable-sized portions and presentation. As foodies, we always looked forward to it.

Merano has an excellent town and country bus service, to reach e.g. the station or the botanical gardens or the Merano 2000 lift, but buses are often crowded and drive vigorously. The train trip up the Venosta valley, past apple orchards to Malles and bus to the beautiful medieval town of Glorenza, should not be missed, nor the ride to the see the painted cloisters of Brixen cathedral. There is a bus down from the station.

Room Tip: Garden-side rooms have balconies, but river-side rooms may have better view

Great hotel , excellent central location on the banks of the river. Staff very attentive and helpful. Opted for halfboard and thoroughly enjoyed the food particularly the evening meals ( 5 courses every night) , very tasty and really appreciated the chef catering for my vegan sons. Lovely swimming pool ( perfect temperature and opening times for pre brekkie swim) , steam and sauna areas. Room sizes ideal , very clean with very comfy ( firm ) beds. Will definitely be back to the hotel in this unknown gem of a town and all it's surroundings set in a beautiful valley of rolling vineyards and apple trees with the backdrop of the Dolomites.
