Piazza san marco is beautiful so bring a camera snap some wonderful pictures with your family and enjoy the view. As for the restaurants prices are completely from another planet, unless you're ok with spending 8 euros for an espresso or 18 euros for a small granita or 23 euros for a shot of baileys when you can walk 3 minutes away and spend a fraction of that for the exact same thing.
Beautiful but way over priced !

So much history to learn (1500+ years) while visiting St. Mark's Square with beautiful cathedral, palace, and great cafes, live music every night and shopping/restaurants/bars. A great place to see the 100m tour (you can take elevator to the top for 8 euro).

My standing recommendation to anyone visiting Venice during the summer season is check out sites very early or very late. It is just too crowded and too hot and humid in the afternoon. Early morning is pre-tour group, and most tour-groups have gone by early evening.

This is obviously the main tourist destination in Venice. If your are staying in Venice I would strongly recommend going at sunrise one day. The plaza is empty and you will get amazing photo opportunities that you wouldn't get in the afternoon with a crowded plaza.

A wonderful place to just sit and absorb the atmosphere! Worth the 15 Euro for a bit of Frangelica to hear the music at the cafe and simply enjoy everything you see.
