I spent one day walking to most sights in Venice, there’s a lot to see and I didn’t want to miss anything. The walk was worth it because at the end we went on a relaxing gondola ride.

The square by day is a nightmare: Lovely to see but impossible to take in as it's full of day-trippers, pigeon lovers and food-loving seagulls. It's gross. We sat with a coffee with pigeons & seagulls all over the table, nibbling chips and smashing glasses while a couple of yards away a beast of a gull was chowing down on a pigeon that had been crushed in the latest rush for tourist seeds. What a romantic place. After dark though, when the pigeons are in bed, the daytrips are over and the lights are glowing the square is a beautiful sight. Grab a gelato and take a seat on the steps, it'll be great.

If you are a tourist in Venice you might as well visit here, because you will want to see Saint Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and other nearby attractions. The piazza is hectic and crowded with people and pigeons. There were people having their photos taken with pigeons landing all over them. Yuck! Those are dirty birds!
We wandered around the entire area and found the shops and cafes to be extremely oriented toward the tourist. This meant there were prices to match. It's a very expensive area. We wanted to sit and have a refreshment in a cafe, but we chose not to do so when we saw the exorbitant prices.
You have to do it if you visit Venice, but there is so much more to the city if you get away from this area.

This is a must see in Venice. Tips from the locals. Don't feed the pigeons they are damaging the environment and buildings. Tip two don't buy coffee or meals on the square unless you want to pay over the odds. Tip three charge to sit on the chairs outside the restaurants evening if you only want to watch life go by. Tip four no back packs in the basilica. Tip five: Doge's palace a worth a visit

The square is one of the largest in Venice but just marginal as far as sites to see.

Smaller squares had more to offer
