Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: Il Bragozzo offers an alternative way to visit the lagoon of Venice, out of normal tourist's routes. We propose 3 or 4 or 6 hours tours in the northern and southern lagoon during the day and a sunset tour. You can customize the tour at your preference. We also take part to events like the Redentore (the Redemeer Fireworks) and the Sensa. Starting from Venice on board of very comfortable classic venetian fishing and merchant wooden boats that, thanks to their flat keel, we reach the most beautiful places of the lagoon, those that just the real venetians knows, in a very relaxing way.

Ditch the idea that when in Venice you have to take a gondola ride. We wanted something a little more personal than ‘conveyor-belt’ tourism in what must be one of the most visited cities in the world and the thought of taking a private trip out on the lagoon with a knowledgable local skipper was highly attractive. Tommaso, makes for an engaging companion and his 30 years out in the lagoon means he must be amongst the most knowledgable of the Venetians as to the lagoon’s secret corners and Venice’s environs.

We had booked both the 6 hour North Lagoon tour as well as the 2 hour sunset tour the following day. On the former in particular, Tommaso was open to our ideas of what we wanted to see and how long we would spend at at location (we had booked El Sultan and the smaller Mora just for the two of us). The 2 tours did not overlap in the areas we covered and while the city itself, with its myriad of narrow streets, bridges and squares is unquestionably the main draw, a trip out onto the lagoon brings home how and why Venice exists. We even got to pass through some of the city canals in the smaller sampierotta Mora at the end of the sunset tour, avoiding the gondola traffic jams elsewhere.

Without that time out on the water it cannot be appreciated how marvellous the city’s very existence is. I can think of no better person to help that understanding than Tommaso with his obvious passion for his place in the city.

Tommaso is a great skipper, he is knowledgeable and friendly. We had a marvellous trip out to Murano and Burano. It is not cheap but it is worth every penny.

After 14 years of annual (sometimes bi-annual) trips to Venice, I was looking for something new and different to do; something "authentic"; something without the usual crowds. This sunset cruise was the perfect answer. El Sultan is a replica of the wooden bragozzo; a typical fishing and transport boat of the Adriatic Sea. It's captain, Tommaso, was one of the nicest people we've ever met in Venice. Informative, friendly, a great navigator and host, Tommaso provided a totally unique tour of the lagoon and its islands, in such a relaxing and fun environment. We had absolutely breath-taking sunset views of Chiesa San Giorgio and the Piazza San Marco as we returned to Venice. On a practical note, his e-mail communication was perfect; we knew exactly where we had to be and when. The weather in Venice is unpredictable, but Tommaso will not run the trip if it is nasty, so we felt confident in booking this trip ahead of time. Quite simply, it was just an AWESOME experience!
