“Honeymoon from hell!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2011

Not the hotels fault - more our travel agent however - So imagine my upset when we arrive to find it is a Comfort Inn. Not only was it the smallest bedroom ever but the shower was fixed to the wall at 4 foot. The bath was a half bath, the door smashed the bidet to get in and out the bathroom and the toilet was situated in such a way that if you sat correctly your chin and face hit the sink. The breakfast, for Italy, was sub standard and cleanliness left a lot to be desired ( mould in the bathroom)

Great hotel for a quick sightseeing tour but not great for a honeymoon!

First of all, if you’re travelling to Venice with luggage, beware, Venice is covered with bridges every few meters and all these bridges are made of stairs. So your fancy trolley with wheels will not help. If your luggage is heavy, be prepared to carry it around. We arrived in Venice by train and took the water bus that stopped at every stop. I guess we took the slow line. We finally landed at the San Marco station I think it was. But San Marco itself was a good few meters away and with Venice FULL of people at that hour of the day, and with us, lugging around our bags, it wasn’t fun. I guess that’s no fault of the hotel. Had we taken a water taxi, they would’ve dropped us off right at San Marco and we would’ve had lesser walking around under the sun to do.

The hotel itself is located less than 3 minutes walk from San Mark’s square and we found it extremely helpful, because we could go out to the square any time of the night; even after dinner. A stroll at night when the whole square is lit up, is simply a sight to see with your loved one. The place is almost deserted after 11 pm with just a few tourist couples here and there. This wouldn’t have been possible if we stayed up in Lido or Murano. Venice is highly populated during the day and by night the population goes down by half. So we enjoyed at night what we couldn’t during the day.

The hotel is basic, lots of restaurants around, (beware of cover charge. We ate sandwiches and take away food both days in Venice), breakfast was decent and the staff helpful. I can’t talk much about value for money in this hotel, because I redeemed my Choice points for the two nights that we stayed here. But I guess the highlight is the proximity to San Marco where all the action is going on. So it may be worth picking this place as opposed to any other if you're interested in staying around main-land Venice for most part of your stay. Also, there are plenty of water-buses that will take u to other islands such as Murano and Burano from right outside San Marco stop. Wifi is free, you need to get a passcode from the reception staff. They also let us use a power adapter for a 10 Euro deposit which was promptly returned when we returned the adapter. And folks, this IS Venice afterall, so don’t expect 5-star treatment anywhere, let alone inside your hotel. This place is full of tourists so you’re bound to be treated indignantly and scoffed upon at restaurants etc. All that said, if I ever go to Venice again, I wouldn’t mind staying at the Comfort Hotel Diana again.

This hotel was true to previous recommendations. Very central, bathroom was generous, beds comfortable and very friendly helpful service at a reasonable cost.

Room Tip: We had a triple family room and although reasonably small worked well

It’s a great location a few hundred feet from San Marco and a 10 minute walk (5 if you don’t dawdle) to the Rialto Bridge. We asked for a back room and the room was lovely only it looked out over an open air restaurant. Which we could hear with the window closed even though it was off season and there were only a few tables. The worst thing was the thin walls and floors. Around 2am we were woken by guests jumping around in the room above us. It takes a lot of noise to wake me up with earplugs and a full dose of ambien. But we did not get a decent sleep here for the noise the 3 nights we stayed.
The breakfast was awful with a small basket of pre-packaged inedible and forgettable stuff. The room was fair sized. The bothroom was modern if a bit warn. The shower head is only about 5 feet high so you don't have to be very tall to have to duck under it. We didn’t even bother with breakfast after that, it was that bad. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the top floor away from the elevator.

Ok, so here’s the quick and dirty on not just this hotel, but Venice as a whole.

First, getting here:
When arriving at the airport and after getting through customs, signs will direct you to baggage claim and to the “transportation area”. No big deal here, just follow the signs. However, getting to the island itself is a different story… First, you do have several options. In hind sight, I would MOST DEFINATLY recommend getting a water “taxi”, not the water “bus”. There is a third option of taking an actual motorized vehicle bus, but it only travels to Venice (via a causeway bridge) and has one drop off point. If you take the actual vehicle bus to the one drop off point, you’d be walking for probably 30min to 1.5 hours to any given point on the main island. If you’re on any of the other islands (i.e. Murano or Lido), then your only option is really a water taxi or water bus anyways – so keep reading. I strongly recommend the “water taxi” because it’s fast, and will take you right to your hotel (if your hotel is on a canal) or a major drop off point close enough to it. We took a water bus b/c it was significantly cheaper at 25 euro per person round trip vs 100 euro for the water taxi one way. However, here’s the kicker – the water bus operates like an actual vehicular bus, meaning it makes several (if not a dozen or so) stops along the way to San Marco Square (which is where this hotel is located). It took us literally 1 hour and 50 minutes to get from the airport to San Marco Square!!! That’s right, and I’ll say it again – 1hr50min boat ride! No joke, not kidding, and not very much fun. So, again – the water taxi is 100 euro for the boat, not per-person. If you’ve got 4 people (or more) in your group, spring for the extra price tag and take the water taxi. I think you can have up to 8 people in a water taxi, and still – only 100 euro (the more people in your group, the more cost effective). There are several kiosks/stands in the transportation area on the 1st floor of the airport, so make your way there to purchase tickets on whatever mode of travel you select. FYI: The water bus ticketing company we bought our passes from charged our credit card transaction as a “cash advance”. Didn’t find this out until we got home, and credit card company said there was nothing they could do about it. Anyways, whatever you select to get here, you’ll need to disembark the water bus/taxi at San Marco Square to get to the Hotel Comfort Diana. Don’t worry, because there are two stops for San Marco Square, if you miss the first one or are unsure don’t freak out, just relax and get off at the second and make your way to the main square. Once in the square, make your way to the Bar American, you shouldn’t miss it. Travel north past the Bar American through the tunnel, and then take your first right. Once you take the right, you’d be traveling due East – then take your 2nd left. Go about 75 yards North (you should now be on Calle dei Specchieri). Hotel will be on your right side, and do “Look Up” as someone else said below, b/c you can and probably will pass it the first time or two. If you get lost, or can’t find the street, just ask – most locals are friendly enough to help if they can.

Second, the hotel:
So I’ve got mixed feelings about this property. Basically, this is an older hotel which probably hasn’t been updated in years, if not multiple decades. You can sense the “history” of this place with its obvious age! The beds are hard as a table, and the pillows lack any “fluff”. Comforter smelled musty too. In essence, not very good nights sleep. On the flip side the sheets and linens were clean – so, that’s a plus I guess. Also, décor and furnishings (and the room as a whole) were obviously not up-to-date, and I doubt they’ll be renovated any time soon. Furthermore, the price was astronomical for the quality you get. I think I paid about $458/usd per night.

However, I pretty much knew all this going into this place. I’d read on Tripadvisor prior to making my reservation, so I was well informed on what to expect. With that said, I just didn’t think I comprehended how much “old world charm” this place would have, and believe me, it’s got a lot of it. The staff seemed really indifferent to our needs or requests. Upon arriving, the front dest clerk give off an attitude like: “Oh great, here are some more Americans”, very un-welcoming feeling. Then, once we got settled into the room later that evening, there were no towels. After a call down to the front desk, and 30min later we got 2 (two) towels for 4 people in our room. Again, staff service not that great. It did get better the next couple of days/nights. We got the towel issue straight the next morning, and the “continental” breakfast was great. They lady who serves you was very nice & warm to us and our daughter, so kudos to her. We stayed in an adjoined two bedroom “suite”, which was well suited for our 4 person troop! The rooms themselves, while from the times of antiquities, were very clean. TV was small, and only in the 1st bedroom, but then again – you’re not in Venice to watch TV, so this didn’t bother us at all.

With all that said – this place’s saving grace, it’s top feature by far – is it’s location, location, location!!!!!

This hotel is literally a block from San Marco Square. From there, you are walking distance from anywhere on the main island of Venice. Can’t begin to say enough about how this hotel is right on top of the action! Multiple restaurants (all very good) on the same street as the hotel, and around San Marco Square. If you want to be in the thick of it all, then this IS the hotel to be at!

3rd, when traveling around Venice:
There is also a couple of the water bus/taxi stops in front of or near San Marco Square. I recommend buying a day pass for the water busses (10 euro/day), and you get unlimited use, takes you to pre-designated stops along the Grand Canal and multiple surrounding islands. You CAN walk to pretty much anywhere, but after the first couple of days, the water buses will be your friend!

4th, when eating at restaurants:
Be aware, that most places charge a “cover charge” like you’re going to a night club, AND that gratuity is almost always included (typically around 12.5%). This really irked me, b/c most waiters were just going through the motions, and not really waiting on you. Service at most restaurants was limited to getting your drink order (not coming back for refills), and dropping food off at your table with the check. With that said, the food was fantastic at everyplace we ate at – so at least they got that right!

OK, so that’s my 2 cents and opinion on the Comfort Hotel Diana & the City of Venice. Hope this helps someone make a decision. Pics included of the hotel for visual reference. I think this place fairly deserves 3 out of 5 rating. Room quality really about a “2.5”, but the location is a “5”. Again, to sum it up, older out-dated hotel which is clean & maintained well, but in an awesome location! Would recommend, and would stay here again.

If you have any questions, you can contact me TripAdvisor, and I’d be happy to try and answer.

If you are walking here, luggage in tow, my advice is to LOOK UP. The sign is obscure. Walked past it twice. It is Venice!
Small room - (expected though, it is Venice), clean, friendly staff. Breakfast was typically great, internet access. Elevator a bit slow, but if stairs are not a problem and time not crucial...who cares! Location, location location! Expensive for budget travellers maybe but again, it IS Venice.

Recently stayed at this site on a trip with our daughter and niece. Could not believe the convenience of the location. Right off San Marco, we were able to walk everywhere. Even with the Papal visit, we could avoid crowds by taking a lovely alley way in the opposite direction. We even were able to eat on a budget at a variety of nearby restaurants and sandwich shops. The staff was very friendly, especially the ladies who served breakfast. Rooms were very clean and adequate in size. The bed mattresses were very hard and I must admit we probably didn't sleep that well, but we were in Venice!! I would definitely stay here again.
