What can I add to other reviews, except to say how much we enjoyed staying at this beautiful tranquil hotel. Darwin was so kind and welcoming as we arrived. He later booked a restaurant for us and arranged a free trip on a water taxi to Murano.
Our room was very clean and beautifully decorated. Next time we would pay the extra and go for a room overlooking the garden or the canal.
Breakfast in the garden was a real treat.
We will look froward to returning to our ' new home in Venice' as Darwin called it.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the canal or the garden.

We decided on Italy to celebrate our 25th anniversary, and started things off perfectly by staying at Hotel Palazzo Abedessa! We intentionally did not select a hotel on the Grand Canal - too expensive for a place to just sleep, and too noisy to actually sleep! Palazzo Abadessa was an excellent alternative for us. Darwin was fantastic, made us feel entirely welcome. The breakfasts were amazing, and thankfully the weather was enjoyable so that we could sit outside in the garden to eat. It was close to the water bus for our train to Cinque Terre, easy for water taxi to get to from the airport, and the room was terrific. Really a very nice place, and a great start to our trip!

Room Tip: Small boutique hotel so I doubt there is a ton of difference in rooms. Just let Darwin know the pur...

This hotel is fantastic! Two things stood out above and beyond all else: the gorgeous back garden where we relaxed and escaped the tourist craziness of venice and most importantly, Darwin and the incredible hotel staff. We were greeted each evening after a long day of sightseeing with complementary Prosecco and soft drinks, snacks, etc. We so enjoyed having breakfast each morning in the garden, and appreciated Darwin's restaurant recommendations. He made our stay extra special. This is a very special hotel in Venice. We look forward to staying there again in the future.

My husband and I travelled to Venice in May 2012. It was raining heavily upon our arrival (bit of a mood dampener), but our spirits were soon lifted by the scenic water taxi trip from the airport and the wonderfully warm reception we received at the Palazzo Abadessa (They even provided umbrellas when we later ventured out into the rain). The mood and atmosphere of the hotel is one of old world Venezian charm, with the reception and dining areas being beautifully decorated and complemented by the calm and tranquil garden. Our room (no 25) was luxurious and comfortable with antique furniture, a beautiful orchid and complementary proscecco and fruit. All the staff were exceptionally nice and seemed genuinely happy to be of help in any way. Breakfast the next morning was very nice. My favourite part was the freshly prepared fruit and the croissants, which were wonderfully rich yet light. We had breakfast both in the breakfast room and out in the garden during our stay (depending on the weather), and we enjoyed them both. Cannaregio is a lovely district, with plenty of shops, and some lovely restaurants. Algiubagio on Fondamente Nove was wonderful, they have an outside terrace which looks out towards the Isola di San Michele and Murano. Do book as they are popular. We covered the majority of Venice on foot, enjoying getting lost in the maze like streets, but we also tried out the Vaporetto, we recommend taking the No 1 up the Grand Canal. Our Venice highlights included St Marks Basilica (Darwin arranged it for us, so we had a time slot and didn't have to queue), The Doges Palace, music and coffee at Florian's in St Marks Square and the Rialto Market, as well as many magnificient Churches. We also liked the 24 hour clocks, particularly the one in the Doges Palace which moved anti clockwise. Oh and the icecream, scrumptious! Best of all though, was returning home to the Palazzo Abadessa after a hard days sightseeing, seeing the staffs' welcoming smiles and relaxing in the garden with a coffee as the sun moved lower in the sky. True Bliss.

This property was recommended to us by friends who had stayed here and they were point on with their recommendation. Classic. Beautifully appointed. Excellent service. And many smiles on the staff's faces and on ours. It was a perfect respite from the crowds and the garden provided a wonderful setting for outdoor breakfasts. We loved the Italian cheeses and fruit that were served. On the day that it rained, we took a free water taxi to Murano and had the factory to ourselves. Perfect. But don't forget to return the beautiful room key when you leave. My husband did and it cost $80 to return it quickly! Darwin was most gracious about it, especially since we sent it along with chocolates.

We will definitely return to "our home in Venice."

We stayed at the Palazzo Abadessa for a special birthday trip, and what a great decision it was. We took a water taxi direct from Marco Polo airport to the door of the hotel - right on the canalside, and were welcomed to "our home in Venice". As soon as we stepped inside we could tell this would be a special place; such beautiful furnishings and decor with flowers to match. Our room was a modest sized classic room, but don't be put off by the term - it was beautifully appointed, with silk lined walls and period furniture, and best of all two juliet balconies that overlooked the wonderful private garden - as the weather was warm we enjoyed our breakfasts in dappled sunlight surrounded by beautiful flowers and plants, and the cheerful sound of birdsong. To call it a "bed & breakfast" hotel does not so justice to the fantastic level of service received from Darwin and the team. At any time of the day we could order a snack or a drink - and most importantly that essential early morning tea tray delivered right to our room. We met the owner one morning ( sorry we did not catch her name) and it was good to see how proud she rightly was of the hotel and it's decor - all hand picked by her and her family. The hotel is a short step away from the main walking route between train station and Rilato/San Marco, with lots of restaurants/cafes nearby. Like others, we found there to be a pleasant mix of guests that were polite and friendly in a way that mirrored the calmness and tranquility that surrounded us. Altogether a perfect experience, and a place ( or Palazzo!) we are sure to return to - bravissimo!!!

Room Tip: Room 24 - Junior Suite, is the only room with a bath as well as shower. We took a look in this room...

My husband and I recently stayed at the Palazzo Abadessa during our first trip to Venice and it was indeed our "home in Venice" as Darwin on reception nicely put it.

After landing at Marco Polo airport following a bit of a bumpy flight we decided to opt arrive at the hotel in style and took a water taxi from the airport. At EUR 110 it was pricey but it was a fantastic experience being taken to the canal gate of Palazzzo Abadessa. We received a warm welcome and were very impressed by the hotel lobby. We booked a classic room and whilst small the room was well appointed and the complementary prosecco and fruit were a nice touch.

Being first time visitors location was important to us and we were very pleased with the location of the Palazzo. We were a few minutes walk to the Ca' D'oro vaporetto stop on line 1, the scenic grand canal route (the vaporettos on this route stop at every stopb which is an excellent tourist activity in its own right). Whilst you will walk a lot in Venice having a vaporetto stop nearby was very useful after a hard day's sightseeing. The hotel is probably about 10 minutes walk from the Rialto Bridge and 15-20 minutes to St Mark's Square depending on the time of day. Also if you plan visiting Murano, Burano & Torcello the Fondamente Nove vaporetto stop which takes you directly to Murano was about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Location wise I thought the hotel was ideal and being in this part of Cannaregio it was nice to be near San Marco but without having to actually stay there (which I suspect might be a pain at times due to the hordes of tourists, particularly during the day).

Breakfast each morning in the hotel was a treat as the weather was lovely which meant we could eat in the garden every morning. The continental buffet had a a pretty decent selection and as I said the garden was beautiful which made for a great breakfast. The serene location for breakfast mind you was occasionally interrupted by the neighbours belting out the Bee Gees, Madonna and some dance music but we found it amusing and reinforced the fact that by opting to stay in Cannaregio you are staying in a residential neighbourhood, albeit one that is so close to all the main attractions, particularly for a first time visitor. Cannaregio also has some great options for eating out, from tratorias, osteria and some more pricey establishments. We did get turned away from one place in Cannaregio due to it being full at 9.30pm so would suggest booking ahead if you have your heart on eating at a specific place.

Overall, we had a wonderful time in Venice, and Palazzao Abadessa was a fantastic base. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in a charming hotel / B&B on a visit to this unique city.
