We recently spent ten nights in the hotel Catalunya in Alghero,
This was our first trip to Sardinia and we intend to return. My husband chose the Catalunya based on the reviews which were posted and also on the location.
We loved our room - if we return we would book one of the suites, we did attempt to upgrade but there were no suites available. The room was clean and very spacious. The blue colour of the furniture and furnishings was very pleasant. The cleaning was exemplary. Our sheets were changed every second day.
Breakfast was good. Plenty of fresh fruit and the staff were very pleasant and accommodating.
We had one small complaint - there is no pool or terrace at the hotel and because we did not have a balcony we did not have a place to sit and read a book outside of the room. Other than that we were very happy with the service and the room. The location was perfect on the edge of the old town and central to all of Alghero.

Perfect location next to the harbour. The suite we stayed in accommodated 3 people, with 2 balconies, and good facilities.
The breakfast was pretty basic. Very helpful reception staff.

The Hotel itself is very Italian. It' s not what you would call a very modern hotel, but it was nice. The breakfeast in the morning time was ham, cheese, tea and coffee. The Hotel is close to the cento storico which is the main area. I advise people looking to go to Alghero to rent a car before they go, because it can be difficult to get around. I will say one thing negitive about the Hotel, on our last day there was some building work going on in the Hotel. I rang down and asked them at reception what was going on. They laughed and told me the hotel (in part) was under renovation and hung up. It was 8am. I dont think he was trying to be rude, but i was really mad. There was nothing done about it. Finally I have to say the place and hotel are truly the Italain experience.

My husband and I have just returned from the Catalunya after a 10 day half board trip. We arrived there in fear and trembling after reading a lot of negative comments on Tripadvisor. However, we were most pleasantly surprised . We had a lovely room on the 6th floor with a view of the harbour and old town (having requested this in our booking email), the bed and pillow were very comfortable, the bathroom a good size and the linen changed regulary. Our safe and T.V. worked and there was plenty of room and hangers in the wardrobe.

Since we had booked half board we had ample opportunity to sample both breakfast and dinner. Breakfasts were plentiful with a choice of juices, cereals, beverages(they will make you a cappuccino if you request it) croissants, rolls, toast-making machine, johgurt, cheese, salami and ham, plus a great variety of fresh fruit.
Dinners consisted of a choice of 4 starters, a choice of 4 main courses, and a choice of dessert, a bowl of fresh fruits or cheeses. The emphasis was more on quality than quantity, but we found them perfectly adequate.

The only area that I had some empathy with in the comments of previous visitors to the Catalunya was that the staff on the front desk rarely smiled. Nevertheless, they were polite and helpful. However, this seems to be something that is common to Alghera as a whole, not just this particular hotel as we found staff generally in the cafes and restaurants not particularly friendly. The worst was the lady in the office where you buy bus tickets just across the park from the hotel. She was so unhelpful regarding my husband's enquiries that he stayed around for a while to try to help other bewildered customers.

All in all we had a very good experience of the Catalunya and would consider staying there again. The one down side was that there was no pool or garden and it is a 15-20 minute walk to the Lido.

  • Liked — Convenient for the harbour and old town. Also the room was clean and comfortable.
  • Disliked — No pool or garden and the bar was very small (just 3 tables) and not intimate.

We visited Sardinia back in June but stayed on the Costa Smeralda side. Travelling back to the airport, we arrived at the town of Alghero with 3 hours to kill. As we drove in and passed the beach I thought how lovely it looked. Then there was the marina and then the old town. I couldnt believe how everything was within walking distance: beach, promenade, marina, the old town with all its history. So we returned to stay in Alghero on 17/18 August. The town lived upto my expectations for a weekend break. We wanted to be in the centre of things and the Hotel Catalunya was perfectly placed, clean and comfortable and reasonably priced. The view from room 709 (yes the same room as the 'boshan' review) was spectacular. As a hotel guest we were able to use the 'Holiday Club' private beach 15 minutes walk which was a great bonus. A great town to visit for a weekend break.
