This started as a Greek temple. It was converted to a church by connecting the columns with walls, so the columns still show. The Normans added their decorative elements. And the facade is baroque. Quite amazing.

This church is set in a lovely piazza. There are signs of the original temple visible outside. There is a small admission fee E2. Outside is impressive and the interior beautiful.
Very close by is another church with the Caravaggio painting of The Burial of Saint Lucy. Outside here is a sign for the Archimedes exhibition, for me the best of Syracusa

In nine years of visiting Italy I have visited a huge number of cathedrals. Some of distinct for one reason or another. This amazing structure screams out its age and classical era heritage. From the facade you may think it will resemble others you have seen, but enter it and you see the sturdiness of Greek architecture, added to by Siracusians (7thc) then Norman touches under Roger I. Remarkable.

Absolutely stunning chapel inside and out. Sits on a beautiful piazza, you must visit both daytime and in the evening. Remember if going in to cover your legs and shoulders, however they do provide wraps. Just sit outside and soak up the atmosphere.

Great facade on this cathedral, also a place to get a quiet moment in the sun and rush outside. There is a sanctuary for visiting inside.
