Owner description: In the heart of medieval Florence, in one of the most evocative building you can discover Dante's house museum. The original building, deteriorated during centuries, was built again in the first decade of the XXth century, where the original Alighieri's house was and where Dante was born in 1265. The museum is divided into three floor, each one dedicated to Dante's life and to the history of Florence of the medieval age. In the first floor, the visitor can learn about the medieval architecture and economy of the city but also, about the life of the poet during his youth. In the second floor, the protagonist is the exile of Dante while In the third floor, the Divine Comedy is the "mistress" of the spaces. Since 2008 the museum has grown, hosting new important exhibition spaces. For example, the ones about the medieval goldsmith's of Florence and the art of "Medici and Speziali". In 2010, the museum acquired important original artifacts from the medieval age.

The historic house of Dante was in the neighborhood, but in the eighteen century it was decided to buy that area, who happened to be for sale, raze all the later building, and rebuild almost entirely some middle-age-looking building as a tribute to the great man. they run some second rate art gallery in the premises, and in the tower on the right, which is not a fake, there is a small and mildly interesting museum. Pretty enough, but not worth a detour; just walk on and spend more time in Badia Fiorentina; now that's a real relic of the past!

We went to Dante's House whilst we were in Florence as we thought this might be a nice, quaint complement to the big art museums in the city. Unfortunately, this was a real disappointment.

There are only a few rooms to look around, the rooms, the artworks, the labelling - it was all very amateur. It was a great chance for me to learn more about Dante's Inferno and Dante's life in general; however, this museum was unable to significantly add to my limited knowledge on the subject.

Don't waste your time and money on this - go instead to the other fabulous (yet tiring!) museums and everything else Florence has to offer.
