Location: Ideal for those driving to Lucca. It is on the via Romana, a short distance from town. From its website, I thought we would be able to walk to the walls but it is too far. The public shuttle bus stops right outside the hotel and is a 6-7 minute drive into the old walled city. It's too bad the shuttle service stops at 8 pm, because we had to use a cab to get back after dinner.
Amenities: after 10 days on the road staying in quaint and charming agriturismi, the BW was a big change. On the positive side, it had great AC, an elevator and flat screen TV....but those are the negatives too. It's basically a charmless chain hotel with no unique features at all. It was unusually hot during our trip so the AC was welcome though! I was happy to have free wifi service and the login and passwords change every 24 hours. Don't forget to stop by the desk to get the new information every day.
The breakfast room is large with a good variety of foods...even scrambled eggs which were quite good. We didn't try the restaurant or bar.
There are bikes to rent out front, but the street the hotel is on has quite a bit of traffic. I would be nervous to ride a bike on it. Once in town, there are many bike rental spots so I might use one of them instead.
Cleanliness: perfect! New sheets every day, bathroom was spotless. No complaints whatsoever.
Staff: everyone was very pleasant during check in and with our typical questions. There was a welcome packet given to us with our key that included a list of restaurants in town, a map, the shuttle bus schedule and other bits of helpful information. I was disappointed that when we asked to purchase shuttle bus tickets at the reception we were told that they ran out that morning. This was at 6 pm...it would have been nice if someone had made a run to get some more since buying them on the bus costs twice as much. Pre-paid tickets are 1 euro and on the bus they are 2. Not a huge sum, but the staff could have made sure to have enough on hand.
Views: none, except for a huge parking lot, which is a very lovely sight when you are used to driving and parking in tiny spaces!
All in all, this is a fine, mid-price hotel for people arriving by car. We were very happy with this choice.

we moved here from a rural air con less property so i was in heaven. We had a family suite which was 2 bedrooms very modern, sheets changed and room cleaned every day which was a contrast from the last place. No nice views etc but practical and functional. It seems aimed at the business traveller due to the lack of outside space such as a garden or pool which kids enjoy. It had WIFI in reception but also claimed to have it in the room although i didnt try. Its a good walk from LUCCA but we had a car anyway and paid to park nr the walls. Breakfasts were very good, choice of cereals, pastries, eggs, bacon, toast, staff very attentive. However,on the last night we ate in the hotel as it was too late to go out but the meal was expensive and poor in fact the worst we had since arriving in Italy. My meal was tasteless and i think it was probably defrosted and reheated. We had an early flight so was showed a small early leaver breakfast room which had a coffee machine, juice and buscuits. Not much choice but it was a nice gesture. Overall i would recommend this for a few days of luxury but without a pool or garden it falls short for a family holiday.

Arriving in Lucca late in the day with no reservations, we drove to the center city and made inquiries at several hotels. Prices for last minute rooms were very high, and we quickly learned that parking our car would be a hassle. Then we headed outside the walls to the Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi, with rather low expectations.

What a pleasant surprise! The staff greeted us very courteously, our room was spacious and modern (likewise the bathroom), and the large breakfast buffet was one of the nicest we'd seen in Italy. Our room had a lovely view of the mountains to the north, and we could see our car in the hotel's large, free parking lot.

Also, driving into the center city for dinner was surprisingly easy. The drive took a little more than five minutes, and we found many parking places were available in city lots late in the day. We enjoyed a relaxing dinner and returned to the Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi with no problem.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night on July 25. It had very nice rooms- a king bed and a large bathroom. It had a pretty view of houses and mountains. It was located outside the medieval city of Lucca. We took a cab to and from the city for about 8 Euro. It was the first time that a taxi driver charged less than was on the meter. We had stayed in Lucca until about 9Pm and there was only 1 cab there . I asked the cab driver how much would it cost to get to our hotel and he said 8-9 Euro. When we arrived at the hotel the meter showed 9.6 euro. I started to give him 10 euro, but he refused to take it, saying that 8 euro was enough. I have never heard of a cab driver asking you for less money. We were lucky to find him. We walked to the taxi locations that were on the map of the town, but he was the only one there. Only the restaurants in Lucca are opened past 7PM so that is the reason it is difficult to find a cab.
The breakfast at the hotel was very good with eggs, bacon, coldcuts, croissants, assorted cereals and juices and breads. We were only there for 1 night so it was perfect for our needs.

We have passed this hotel over the years because it was a Best Western and we wanted the more local hotels. This time we came to town early and it was a 4 day holiday so all the hotels we wanted were full - this was our last resort! What a pleasant surprise! Of course it had EVERYTHING and the food was wonderful, they had bacon and scrambled eggs as well as all the regular coldcuts and breads, etc. for breakfast. We had dinner one night and it was an amazing meal that was very budget friendly. The bus 11 stops in front of the hotel and takes you into the walls of Lucca then returns back on bus 12 for only 3 Euros rt pp. I can't say enough good stuff about this hotel! The staff was very professional and helpful.

Room Tip: Just ask!
