Don't miss a gorgeous trip around this well-preserved Roman wall. Beautiful views and a truly unique experience, whether walking leisurely, renting a bicycle, or going for a run.

Ever have one of those travelling days when you know you're trying to do too much? Adding a visit to Lucca after a visit to nearby Pisa brought that to mind. Parking near the walls was easy; the walk through the gated entry to the old town was short; the climb to the walls was short, but we were tired (and Mr. TwoInMaine was a bit cranky). Then we got to the top of the walls, and everything was all right. This is an easy, flat stroll (shared with bicycles, skaters, families with children in strollers, joggers) through a long circular park. We did about 3/4 of the tour, ending near the "canal" - the bed of the stream that supplied medieval Lucca with water - and then walked back through the center of the town. We talked, admired the view of the historic churches and towers and gardens from the ramparts, and just relaxed. Back in the town we stopped for coffee, window shopped, braved the large crowds that gathered only near the duomo, and left with a wish to return for at least an overnight. The "new" Lucca that lies outside the walls is a seemingly busy and prosperous place, but we did not spend time there.

The massive fortified walls and ramparts that surround the old part of Lucca are what sets it apart from all other Italian cities. It’s the symbol of this charming place. I never cease to enjoy a stroll here, even after many years of visiting Lucca. Definitely one of my favourite spots anywhere to relax. It’s great all year round for walks, and jogging, but probably the best way to enjoy “le mura” is by bike at a leisurely pace. Bikes can be hired from several places around the city. Poli and Bizzarri are two of them. Both in Piazza Santa Maria, inside the walls near Porta Santa Maria. Your hotel could also have bikes for hire. Sometimes even as part of a package, like Hotel Rex. If you can be here during the colder months, in autumn (fall) you’ll catch the changing colour of the leaves or in winter the eeriness of the occasional fog. The fortifications used to be covered by trees all way round, but age and sickness has left gaps in the mantle so in summer there are several sections bare of shade. Nonetheless, a part of Lucca not to be missed.

We were in Lucca for a long weekend and went round the walls on foot as well as on a four-wheel bike which we rented for 20 euros. Both were great fun. I'd avoid Sunday morning if I did it again as it seemed like half the population had the same idea as us!
Overall, though, an experience not be missed.

We were staying opposite the wall in Lucca & were able to walk across the green.. at night it was very odd because the path seemed to lead to a blank wall & the lighting was quite dim....at the last nanosecond you could see a tunnel opening up at right angles. I called it the 9 & three quarters hole in the wall.

It's wide enough to take a lot of walkers, cyclists, families, skateboarders & so on. We were there in autumn but in the summer it must be extremely busy.

There are also steps at intervals to gain access into the town.

The whole way (we didn't get all the way round) are views to the towers of Lucca so I can understand why it's the number 1 attraction.
