extremely sympathic, nearly idyllic ambience - aesthetically refurbished old building without exagerated hotel-hullabaloo - wonderful garden - beautiful views - bus stop in three steps' distance - easily accessible by car - amiable host family - not a super quiet place, but relaxing nevertheless ... we loved it.

“Beautiful Renovated Stable 1 mile from Siena”
Reviewed October 29, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

On arrival at La Stalla di San Lazzero we were warmly greeted by host Leonardo and his father Carlo. The "stable" has been sensitively renovated to acknowledge its architecture and history while updating with mostly IKEA furnishings. The sofa in the living area was very comfortable for two people. Beautiful artwork by Carlo hangs on the wall. A bistro table and chairs just outside the kitchen door in the garden made it pleasant to sit outside and enjoy wine or coffee. A CD player with selections of beautiful music was a welcome addition. There is a TV but we never turned it on. WIFI is excellent!

We used only the larger upstairs bedroom with large but extremely firm bed. The one bath is upstairs and includes a toilet, bidet, sink and shower stall which is 30 inches by 36 inches at best, perhaps even smaller. Thank goodness we are not large people!

The "Stalla" is bright and airy. It is just beyond the family villa which sits immediately on via Piccolomini, the 2 lane roadway to Siena and Porto Romana. During the day the traffic to and from Siena is fast and fairly heavy. The "Stalla" is just a mile or so outside the city walls but there are no sidewalks so walking along the roadway is hazardous. Luckily the local bus stop is just across the street. Getting onto the roadway from the driveway can be dicey, but the "fish eye" mirror at the gate helps. By 10 p.m. the traffic noise dies down and one can sleep unless awakened by an ambulance. Otherwise, just the occasional rooster or dog is heard.

It was easy for us to visit various hill towns from this location. For us, GPS was a lifesaver!

Only wish we could have spent more time with the host and his lovely family!

“Wonderful, relaxing holiday”

We recently enjoyed a nine day holiday in la Stalla . This charming apartment is everything the other reviewers have said . It is bright , clean , comfortable and spacious with loads of old world features . The beautiful garden provided a lovely outside space for morning coffee or evening glass of wine. The apartment's location is ideal for touring Tuscany and parts of Umbria . Our host, Lorenzo and his family were available to us at all times and their help greatly enhanced our holiday. We were sorry to leave and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending La Stalla to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday.

“Charming apartment, exceptionally welcoming and helpful host”

We spent a wonderful week in this excellent apartment, very comfortable and spacious, and perfectly located for visiting Siena and the surrounding Tuscan towns and countryside. Owners Leonardo and Claudia were exceptionally friendly and helpful hosts, with excellent suggestions of places to visit in the area.
The apartment is an old coach & stable building adjacent to the family home, with much traditional charm, which Leonardo has tastefully converted and furnished. My one concern before booking was the proximity to the road, though this was in fact no problem at all - there is quite a bit of traffic up and down the road during the day, but there was little or no road noise inside the apartment, and in any case the bedroom windows face away from the road.
The website does not show pictures of the bathroom, but like the rest of the apartment this is well equipped but with a rustic charm.
All in all, a fantastic location for a stay in one of the loveliest parts of Italy. Highly recommended. Thank you Leonardo and Claudia.

“Handy location, light and airy, hassle free”
Reviewed July 25, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We really enjoyed our stay. Leonardo was helpful, from booking onwards. La Stalla itself is fairly newly converted into a light and airy little holiday house - all the rooms are a good size and the shower is great! I think the layout suits a family with an older child best, as the stairs wouldnt be great for a toddler, but for our family it was a much better option than a hotel. And there is everything you need to rustle up a delicious meal from the produce that you won't be able to resist buying on your travels around the region.

Its very near the city walls of Siena - walking distance, but there is a busy bend on the road so we took Leonardo's advice and always took the bus (a quick journey, cheap and frequent service - I only wish it was like that in the UK!) or drove. There is loads to do. We spent a couple of days wandering round the beautiful medieval city of Siena, a day in Firenze, a couple of days exploring Tuscan hill towns, and wallowed in a couple of the hot springs that arise in the hills. It was all within an easy drive of our base here.

“Awesome host and beautiful home...”

My friend and I spent a week at this lovely villa. We were graciously greeted by our host, with a bottle of vino in hand, after a long day of travel on our part. Leonardo treated us as if we were old friends. He was warm, friendly, and very helpful (tips about Siena). We instantly felt at home. The home is beautiful. There are two full bedrooms and a shared bath in the hall. Lots of windows and natural lighting. The scene, outside the windows was breathtaking (I live in a big city and normally look out to a street). There is a full kitchen, everything you need to make a home cooked meal or reheat leftovers. And there is a small patio, near the garden, where you can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet. There is a staircase to the bedrooms so if you're not one to climb or carry luggage up a set of stairs you may want to reconsider. The house is super clean, the furnishings are modern and very comfortable. Nothing about the home made us feel like we were staying in a sterile 'rental', equipped with second hand or worn out furnishings. I say that because we traveled to 11 cities during this trip and rented homes / apartments the whole time AND this was the only property we stayed at where we felt cozy, comfortable, and had with ample space to relax. The property is located just outside Siena; easy to get to by bus, cab or if you're up for it, a 1/2 hr walk. We walked a lot mostly because the weather was gorgeous during our visit. If you take the bus, be sure to buy tickets while you're in town. Go to the visitor center and they'll give you the full scoop. We also traveled to several vineyards, by tour bus. The tours were also purchased at the visitors center. We ate at La Chiacchiera several times...the THICK homemade pasta was yummy. It is a small place, away from the center of town. If you're a group of 4 you'll probably get your own table but for us (2) we were always paired with another group (family style seating); separate checks of course. We met other travelers and shared bottles of wine as we told stories of our adventures. Great food! I hope you enjoy your visit to Siena and please say hello to Leonardo for us. Best wishes.
