“No tea/coffee”
Reviewed 11 December 2011

This is certainly a beautiful hotel, but let down by a few things. No tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Difficult to get decent 'black' tea in Basel restaurants.. Very expensive city, and no small, inexpensive cafes. The shower in the bath was gorgeous, but a less agile or fit person would have found it precarious getting out of the bath. Nothing to hold on to. Difficult to get the room cool at night, even with the air-con (this in December). Lovely breakfast room overlooking the Rhine, and excellent 'spread' of hot and cold food, although the bacon in the covered, heated tray was a frazzled heap by 10 am, and not refurbished. .

This is probably the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at in my life. The hotel lobby, bar, and restaurants over look the Rhine River which is absolutely stunning background. I wasn't able to dine at the two michelin star restaurant they have here, but the Brasserie restaurant is fantastic! (but not cheap!!) Very expensive hotel, but the hotel and staff work hard to accommodate guests. There are a few little things the hotel does that is very charming.. loved it! I wish I could have stayed longer - and truly hope to have the pleasure to stay again soon.

Nice luxury hotel, well situated in downtown Basel, with a prestigious restaurant inside. Personnel is quite kind and rooms are nice. Definitely a place where to get back and have some mor etime to enjoy. Casanova himself mentioned it in his book! Breakfast is good, looking at the river and enjoying some nice food.

I practically lived at Les Trois Rois for 7 months as I was working on a project in Basel. I therefore feel able to offer a reliable review!

There is no doubt that it's a pricey hotel (particularly at today's exchange rate), but what you get for your money is beautifully appointed rooms, exemplary professional service and amazing food.

Les Trois Rois is an old-school hotel focused on quality with Swiss levels of efficiency and reliability - a very refreshing change from the big brand corporate hotels!

Room Tip: If you stay city side, try and get a room on the top floors - the trams going past can be noisy firs...

We are experienced travelers and have stayed at wonderful hotels. This hotel rates right at the top. If you want to experience the luxury of 5+ star travel – this is it. From the moment our taxi arrived to the time we had to check out, we were treated by a most professional staff. Check in was simple. We appreciated that as we had just traveled for 16+ hours.

Our spacious room, overlooking the Rhine, was elegant – old world feeling yet with the latest 21st century conveniences including very fast internet service. The closet is a wall of built-ins with beautiful wood doors. There is a luxurious bath and fantastic bed linens. The room key is on a large tassel and there is a large red tassel to hang on the door in order not to be disturbed and a green one to have your room made up.

The location is simply the best in Basel. Although your stay includes a mobility pass for the tram, you can walk to everything. We took the tram one day, just to experience it. This hotel is right at a bridge. On Sunday, we walked across the bridge and strolled up and down the river with the rest of Basel. (Remember – Basel is closed up tight on Sunday.)

Our concierge had an excellent recommendation for dinner – Walliser Kanne. In fact, it was so good we went back again the next night. We did not eat at the hotel either of the two nights we were there, so I cannot comment on the food. Before we left we did have hot chocolate out on the terrace overlooking the Rhine. It just doesn’t get much better!

If you want to splurge and treat yourself to the ultimate - this is the place to stay while in Basel. It is pricey, but worth every penny. Elegant, great attention to detail, staff with impeccable manners (rare these days).

Room Tip: Book a room overlooking the Rhine.

Next time you're in Basel, treat yourself to a night at the best hotel in town. The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois (three kings as in the three magi) has it all: Full view of the Rhine and of Kleinbasel, spacious rooms, free drinks from the minibar and impeccable service. Don't forget to visit the bar and (if you feel rich) the wonderful restaurant "Cheval Blanc" (2 Michelin stars).

Room Tip: Book a river view room / suite - it's well woth it!
