“My Third Stay: Very Clean, Very Friendly, Wonderful Location!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2011

We stayed in nine hotels during our 3 week vacation, and rate this hotel as excellent. This was my third stay at this hotel, my sixth trip to Europe, and my party consisted of my wife, 70 Yr old sister and myself. We stayed at the Des Alpes Hotel 7 – 9 June 2011. Hotel has a prime location adjacent to Chapel Bridge and Lucerne’s Historic Area. All the sights were within easy walking distance: Lion Monument, museums, churches, Co-Op Store (EXCELLENT cafeteria style buffet restaurant), shopping, and train station. There is an elevator to make all the rooms readily accessible. Our original room was lovely but had a shared balcony with another room. We requested to be changed to a “non-balcony” room so we could leave the windows open (non air-conditioned) and sleep feeling more secure. Our selected room was #234: Second floor with commanding views of the Chapel Bridge, River, Mountains and somewhat view of the lake. The staff was most helpful and courteous. We greatly enjoyed their complimentary breakfast buffet on the outdoor balcony: Coffee and hot chocolate, boiled eggs, and large selection of deli meats, cheeses, juices, bread, rolls and delicious preserves! We parked our car in the city garage co-located with the Co-Op store and restaurant, exchanged currency at the train station and visited the Co-Op store (across the street from the Lion Monument) for bottled water, snacks and the enjoyment of their wonderful cafeteria style buffet. I had a great visit here and would not hesitate to choose this hotel for a future stay! Dining: We had evening dinner in the hotel’s café on the river, breakfast on the hotel’s balcony and delicious cheese fondue in the hotels main restaurant as an afternoon treat. Only negative comment: There is no elevator to the hotel’s restaurant which is located on the river level. Your options were to either negotiate a curved relatively small staircase or exit the hotel at the main entrance and take a short walk around the building and down a few steps. My 70 year old sister uses a cane but was able to go up the curved interior staircase without too much difficulty (we didnt attempt to take her down the staircase).

Room Tip: Communicate: Clearly state your requirements, your desires, and be flexible. Few days before departi...

We stayed in a room with a view of the lake on a Friday night. There was some noise on the street outside but it didn't worry us once we had closed the balcony door. It may be a problem in summer. The markets appeared right outside on Saturday morning and were fun to browse - we bought some meat, cheese and bread for a picnic lunch. This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in on our whole trip, but seemed to be comparable in price to others in Lucerne. We managed the walk to and from the train station with luggage, no problem. We could see the hotel as soon as we emerged from the station so knew exactly where we were going. Only trick is that the entry is from the back, in Furengasse as the address suggests, not from the waterfront side.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony on the lake side costs more but is very nice. Higher rooms may have less noise f...

We really enjoyed this hotel. When we arrived we were greeted by Thomas, who was probably the friendliest person I have ever encountered at the front desk of a hotel. He helped us quite a bit with out many questions and made us feel extremely welcome. We were expecting rudeness based on other reviews so imagine our delight when we had such a kind and exuberant greeting. We didn't have too many dealings with the other staff members but they all seemed polite enough.

The location is great. It's about a 10 minute walk from train station and across the bridge. Now keep in mind that if you have heavy luggage and any sort of physical limitation you may have a little trouble with the walk. It is on cobblestone and the bridge isn't exactly short. There were many nice shops and restaurants nearby and the entire area is just beautiful. We had a street side view so the view from our room was just of a building but you can pay more for a room with a view of the lake.

The room was small but that's to be expected in Europe. It was really clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was nice with a great shower. The entire hotel was nicely decorated and clean. The complimentary breakfast was decent with a variety of meats, cheeses, bread, cereal, fruit, yogurt and soft boiled eggs along with coffee and juice.

I highly recommend doing the Mt. Pilatus golden round trip tour. It is about $100 and worth every penny. You take a 90 minute boat ride with breathtaking views to the to the mountain, and you actually ride up the mountain in the steepest cog wheel train in the world. The views from the top were spectacular and you can have many options as to what you can do up there. There is a restaurant, hiking, line zipping, a toboggan ride, etc. You then go down the mountain in a gondola and take a bus back to town. We loved it and my boyfriend said it was the best $100 he ever spent on a vacation.

Overall this hotel was great. It may be considered a little pricey but we found everything in Switzerland to be that way and were very pleased.

We stayed at Hotel Des Alpes for 2 nights and had a wonderful experience. Very clean room and bathroom. We faces the alley and it was a little loud in the mornings but you are in Switzerland on vacations so who cares. Spent a lot of time sitting at Mr. Pickwicks enjoying the views and cold beer.

Hotel des Alpes is located on the River Reuss, with views of the Chapel Bridge. The hotel is an easy 5 minute walk from the train/bus station and is a convenient starting point for sightseeing. The room was of average European hotel size, translated: on the smaller size, but clean and in April, of reasonable value. Personally, I enjoyed the night time view of the Chapel Bridge, so it may be worth it to pay a little extra for the river view room. The breakfast was enough to get you started for the day, but if you are lucky to be there on market day, you can pick up something to snack on while sightseeing.

This a perfect hotel to stay if your travels take you to Lucerne.

This hotel is in a great location to all attractions and the train station. Pay the extra for the river view. The street side is very noisy at night. Good breakfast too.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the higher floors overlooking the river.

We stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Des Alpes in October 2009 (I had to select Nov 2010 for the review as there was no option earlier than this!) - it was a bit of a shock to the system to find ourselves back in busy city streets after a peaceful stay in Grindelwald, however it was an easy walk from the train station to the hotel, even with two large suitcases in tow! As a number of other reviewers have mentioned, we found the front desk staff to be rather abrupt and not particularly helpful, although the staff in the breakfast room were very pleasant and the housekeeping staff were excellent. We took the quilt off the bed the first night, as it was too warm, and just used a thinner blanket and came back to find our bed had been remade with a top sheet added, which was very thoughtful. The bed was extremely comfortable and surprisingly, as I am a light sleeper, we were not bothered by street noise - we found Mr Pickwick's next door closed up at around midnight and the river front was very quiet after that. The room had excellent double-glazing in the way of doors that could be altered to be safely left open by tilting the top inwards, to allow fresh air into the room during the day while we were out.

We booked a river view room and I was a little disappointed when I realised we were on the first floor - until I walked out on to the balcony and found we were looking directly at the beautiful Chapel Bridge. What a magnificent view out over the river and this delightful historic bridge, especially with the many white swans gliding back and forth and even (once the clouds cleared) an excellent view of Mt Pilatus. We had the same view every morning at breakfast as well - the breakfast buffet was relatively small but had a good choice of food - and we were very amused to watch the tiny sparrow-like birds who would cheekily hop in at any opportunity to try to steal a crumb or two (or maybe a cornflake!) from the tables on the balcony. The room was fairly small, with a rather creaky floor, but had all the amenities we needed. The bathroom was tiny but was spotlessly clean and had obviously been recently renovated. There is a safe in the room, but you need to pay about 35-40 CHF as a deposit when you get the key from Reception, which was rather unexpected.

As mentioned, the location was excellent - apart from the view, most local attractions were within walking distance, and it was very pleasant strolling around the Old Town although the streets were always busy with tourists, and there were tourist buses everywhere in the main streets.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay in Lucerne and at the Hotel Des Alpes, our only "complaint" would be the attitude of the hotel's front desk staff.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a river view room.
