If you're in Luzern for just a day take the trip to Pilatus. The ride down on the cable car was great but the ride up on the cog wheel trian was spectacular. We took the Golden Pass and went by ferry which was enjoyable and relaxing. We actually left Luzern around 2pm and still had plenty of time to do the whole trip in a relaxed fashion. You'll need more time to have lunch or dinner. The only small problem was finding the bus after the cable car ride down from the mountain.

This is a must see when in Lucerne. I mean MUST see, if you are debating amongst a few things, this should be top priority.

What you need to do is the Golden Round Trip, you can buy this ticket at the tourist information center connected to the train station. This will take you by boat from Lucerne (starts right by the train station) and will bring you to the base of the mountain. From here you would take the steepest cog rail car ride in the world to the top of the mountain. Once here you hike around for a couple hours with so many wonderful sights to see. Also at the top of this mountain are some military installations, which I thought were pretty cool! Once you are done, you then take a Gondola down the mountain. Half way down you get off to take the next gondola down. But before you do so, I recommend to do the longest Summer bobsled course in Switzerland. It cost around $7-$10 per person, but was well worth it, something I will never have the opportunity to do again, and the view is spectacular as you cruise at some super fun speeds. Once you are done you take a gondola the rest of the way down. From here your Golden Pass gives you buss access for the rest of the day, which you will take back into Lucerne when you are ready.

Note: There is food and lodging at the top of the mountain. Food was reasonable when compared to the rest of expensive Switzerland.

Absolutely loved hiking this mountain. Hiked up to the last gondola before the top for 2 1/2 hours and then took the large gondola up. The views are incredibly rewarding. Do not hike this if you think the hike will be "easy". It is an intense climb..at least in American standards! Highly reccommend this and I would hike it again!

I recently went on a 10 day vacation with my parents and adult siblings. We spent all of our time in Switzerland. Mt. Pilatus was an excursion we chose because of the reviews and ease in getting up the mountain. We were not disappointed at all. One thing that was a bit confusing however was the timing of when they "shut down" parts of the tour for yearly maintenance. Everything we read said the end of summer was the "end of October" so we planned the trip according to that. However we found that many of the things we planned to do, including the gondola and bobsled on Pilatus actually "closed" on Nobember 24. That caused us to have to change some of our plans a bit. We still had a marvelous time but would have been nice to know this. The cograil train was fine and we still had the awesome views from Pilatus.

Unless you have a Swiss Travel Pass, the trip up is quite expensive, as is everything in Switzerland. However, it is money well spent. Spend sometime and walk around. When I first arrived, it was cloudy, overcast, and misty. Within 10 mins, it all blew over and you could see for miles. 10 mins later, the clouds blew back in. This went on for several hours. However, it was still gorgeous. The Swiss Alps is something NOT to be missed.
