Owner description: The most spectacular way to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express from Chur / Davos / St. Moritz - Valposchiavo - Tirano links up regions with different languages and cultures. This is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery. On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures. The railway is unique, blending ideally with the alpine landscapes around the Albula and Bernina Passes. The train negotiates the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and inclines of up to 70 per mille with ease. At the highest point on the RhB, 2,253 metres above sea level, you will find the Ospizio Bernina. Here, visitors can delight in the cultural and natural surroundings and enjoy the Alps at their most impressive.

My husband & I went on The Bernini Express for the day on a return trip to St Moritz, Switzerland from Tirano Italy, with our son & his wife.
Be sure to choose the panoramic view train for which you will need to get to the station early for.
The views along the way up to St Moritz are spectacular!
I would maybe also recommend as you are leaving from Italy; before you head off, grab some amazing Italian bread rolls, salami, prosciutto, cheese etc. for lunch from Titano, as the chocolate in St Moritz is to die for but the food is just okay.
Also if you want to go further up the Alps once you get to St Moritz, make sure you check the time of year as the lifts are only open in the busy seasons.
You will LOVE the train trip and you will LOVE Switzerland!

We took the regular train from St Moritz to Tirano (instead of paying extra for the the special express). GREAT decision. The train was almost empty (we left St Moritz at 7:48 Hs). The windows of the regular train can be opened which was a heaven to take pictures.
The train travels quite slow, stopping in every postcard rated little stations. What a nice journey! Best in my life!

We travelled on the Bernina Express through the Swiss Alps from Tirano to Chur. The scenery was magical.
Try to get first class tickets in the Panoramic coach as there is less people and more room to move and stand to get photos you want.
You can book tickets through the Swiss rail service Rhaetian Railways however these will be expensive and your tickets will be emailed to you as e-tickets. You can also book the same journey through the German rail company Deutsche Bahn for the same journey exactly for considerably much cheaper, however, these tickets will be mailed out to you without tracking numbers, so if they get lost it’s too bad.
You MUST also reserve your seat (when they become available usually 60 days before travel) when booking tickets and seat reservations can only be done through Rhaetian Railways.
Check out the website “seat61” for more details. Great site and will tell you all you need to know further.
The journey was magnificent with massive mountains and some snow capped, mountain waterfalls, tunnels, bridges etc.
This was a trip we did is summer and want to go back to do the same trip in snow covered winter it was that good.
Plenty of space on board for luggage, very comfortable leather seats with a small table and armrests, large panoramic windows for amazing views and very quiet.
I recommend you take your own food and drinks on board which is allowed as the range on board is very limited and sadly very slow to receive. Not to mention quite expensive. We took on board wine (don’t forget cups), cheese, crackers, water and sweets. All perfectly acceptable and saved a lot of money. The train trip is slow which is perfect for taking in all the scenery and the trip from Tirano to Chur is around 4 hours.
Cannot wait to do this trip again in winter.

Double celebration ... our 35th Wedding Anniversary, and my wife’s birthday. We’d planned this to happen, some time during our stay at Lake Como, with our very good friends. Bit of a trek to get to Tirano, but made it with 20 mins to spare (allow at least 2.5 hours from Como). We’d booked a return, in the 1st Class carriage, with panoramic view. We only had a day to spare, so only booked a return to St Moritz, which saw us miss some of the sights further on, so I’d recommend the full journey, if you have the time. Regular stops at beautiful photo-opportunities. Couldn’t fault it in any way. If you’re in the area, you HAVE to do it (we’d love to return when it’s been snowing). Fantastic day!!!
