“Great location but disappointing rooms”
Reviewed 25 April 2011

This hotel is located just opposite to the Interlaken West station. First bad thing was that the location on the internet says it is in the Interlaken Ost (meaning east) but later we figured out that it was on the west.
However, the rooms are medium sized and equipped with tv and bathroom..What disappointed me was the torn towels and the dirty sinks. It looked slightly unhygenic. The glass tumblers in the bathrooms were not new ones. This again added to the not so good feeling.

We stayed at Merkur Interlaken for 2 nights and we found quite no faults at this hotel. It is located across Interlaken West station. Very easy to move in Interlaken so don't bother about location at all.

Room is in adequate size, not that small though. It's enough for 2, our room's facing the station and we had no trouble at all with the noise of the train.

It is a basic hotel to explore the Jungfrau region and it is definitely worth the money. Breakfast is included (bread, jam, cereal, milk, juice, ham, turkey, everything!).

Good: The location is great. It is opposite the Interlaken West Station, Bus Stn & cruise.
Bad: The rooms are really small & service is poor. They don't have a kitchen(even for warming milk)...families avoid it. It is definitely not 3 star. The breakfast is cereals, bread & yogurt.
It is suited for tourists who want a place to come back & sleep.
We booked the hotel via Swiss Tours & feel completely let down at the standard of the hotel they put us in.

We visited Switzerland a couple of days back. Our first destination was Interlaken. We travelled all the way from India, got off at Zurich, boarded a train, got off at Bern and took another train to Interlaken. It was a tiring long journey.
We were met at the reception by this young girl (her name starts from A, Arena, Arianne?) and a lady. We arrived at 11.00 am and and the check-in is at only 2..00 pm, so we knew we would have to deposit luggage and stroll around Interlaken a bit before checking in. Maps are available freely at stations and hotel too. But since this was our very first destination we didn't know about that. When we asked the ladies at the reception they were very cold and not at all courteous. They weren't forthcoming to tell us anything as though giving out information was costing them money. They weren't even ready to hand us the maps that they had (which we came to know about later). We were not carrying our phones and we wanted to make a call to India. We inquired how much it would cost and the answer from the young girl was "I don't know". The other older lady's answer was, "how should i know, i have never made a call to India; you will have to try and figure out". Isn't it the hotel's basic responsibility to provide the guests with the calling charges? I wanted to visit the washroom before we set out for a three hours stroll around Interlaken and when i asked whether i would be able to use one, the reply was that the rooms aren't free till 2.00 pm which is the check in time and we wree directed to a nearby supermarket called Migros to take a leak!!!I Don't these people at the reception have nature's call? Isn't this apartheid that we weren't allowed to use their washroom? I felt we had arrived in a stone age hotel with cold, morbid people. Another young girl changed duties with the first young girl over the next few days we were put up here. (Her name begins with M) It was the same cold expression, the same attitude of not making an eye contact while speaking. We felt as though they were doing charity by putting us up. And this attitude despite the fact that the hotel rooms don't have anything good to offer - just very mediocre.
I can criticise this hotel so vehemently because i can compare it to the other three star hotels we stayed at - Hotel Drei Konige at Lucerne and Hotel Leoneck at Zurich. The people were very warm and friendly, extremely welcoming at these two. We arrived at Hotel Leoneck at Zurich at 12.00 pm and despite being early we were given a room. Now i am not suggesting that the same should have been done at Merkur, because rules are rules. But basic courtesy and decorum about how to make your guests welcome should be cultivated in these people. After all they aren't working in an NGO, they are part of the hospitality industry! My advice would be there are far too many hotels in Interlaken and just because Merkur is bang opposite Interlaken West is no concession. We had to go over to Interlaken Ost to make a journey to all of the following places - Jungfrau, Murren, Wengen, Brienz, Lauterbrunnen, Meiringen, Lucerne, Kleine Scheidigg. So skip this hotel right away.
And if you still choose to stay here - then seek for Elizabeth - she serves the breakfast - she is the only ray of sunshine in this bleak place! Alles Gute and Auf Wiedersehen.

We stayed at this hotel during our Switzerland trip recently. The location of the hotel is good..it is just opposite the Interlaken West Station (not Ost)..so it is easily accessible by train and bus..

The receptionist was quite rude though..she gave a cold shoulder to all our questions by saying "I dont know" for anything we asked..The room was also quite bad..very small and dingy with very old furniture..there was hardly any place to move around..and the mattresses were horrible..hard and uncomfortable..The breakfast was ok..largely breads, cold meat and cornflakes...

Overall an ok hotel..I would not recommend it if you can get a better hotel for a similar price!

Great location, right opposite Interlaken West and the lakes, very close to the restaurants, supermarket.

Basic no frills rooms - great value for Interlaken, which is otherwise expensive, popular with young group travellers from Asia, Internet connection is available only in the lobby.

The girl at the front desk had no knowledge of the area or was unwilling to help. But the train station was right across and the people at the SBB ticket counters are very knowledgeable and friendly, and all speak good English

Breakfast is basic (no eggs or hot chocolate), I did not get breakfast on one day, as the cook was late by an hour (in Switzerland ! ), there was no refund, just a standard apology.

Rooms are old fashioned, quiet and comfortable and have a great view of the alps.

Overall good value
