Owner description: A museum dedicated to the famous fictional detective.

Based in the cellars of the old English church the place pretends to be Sherlock’s museum. In fact it is a strange collection of the low importance artifacts of an era provided by the Sherlock Holmes Society in London. The audio guide tells well-known facts about the character more suitable in London than in Switzerland. There is a reconstruction of the Baker Street apartment but why in Meiringen?

Sir Doyle would have loved this place. Hidden in a plain sight under an old Anglican church, you'll find a tiny hall with very curious artifacts. The audio guide in many languages gives you a nice tour around them and you'll soon learn that every single one of them tells a sweet story related to the famous hero. The lady from the desk is really nice and helpful, and knows a lot about the place herself. The place is very calm and only small groups are let inside, to enjoy the proper atmosphere.
The dominant of this place is the reconstruction of 221B Baker Street "Livingroom", displaying and inspecting the Victorian items with precious and care.
You really feel like a part of something big and old, and as I overheard, it's sometimes difficult for the parents to explain that the famous detective was a fictional character. The museum pays him a nice, proud tribute without being annoying by advertising all over the place. Small, detailed, well-made, accessible, surprising, calm, educational, clean, smartly resolved, opens early. I think Sir Doyle would approve of this kind of museum, especially if he knew it's located to his favorite hotel.

The museum is a little gem in the pretty village of Meiringen. Based in an old church with the main museum downstairs, though only small an excellent audio tour guides you. Bought a joint ticket with the Reichenbach falls which are located nearby and accessed via funicular.
Really worth a visit !

The museum is in a building resembling a small church, about 2-3 minutes walk from the railway station. It is very small, not able to take more than about 5-6 at a time. The audio guide has a very interesting and informative commentary. Apart from the introduction, which is on the ground floor, the museum itself is down a short spiral staircase.

It is only open in the afternoons, 1.30-6.30 I seem to recall. If you have a Meiringen tourist card it is free, and the audio guide is included in the price.

The exhibits are well arranged and described with a clear and easy to use audio guide. Reconstructed living room at 221b Baker Street is very well done and informative.
