Old charm

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 11, 2024
What a great find. Found last minute hotel on Amex. It is a little climb from the Wengen train station. First built int he 1890s and still has that feel although it does have all the modern comforts. The internet is passable but a little slow. 10-15mb/sec. Has a small elevator. Some of the sinks and wall paper are from a renovation in 1930!! Doors, windows, and many other things were renovated in 2000. The windows and doors are much more sound proof then expected. They have daily dinners (didn't get to try). Included breakfast buffet is simple but very good. Scrambled eggs, bacon, cereals, yogurt, muesli, fresh fruit, several different breads, jams, butter, cold cuts, cheeses, fruit juices, milk, coffee, tea station. More than enough.

Our room had a balcony with great views of the valley and mountains.

If you're looking for something quaint with a feel of a blast from the past look no further.

This hotel is charming and hearkens back to the days when it was built (1895), where the guest room is small, but there is lots of shared space to enjoy. And enjoy we did. We were there for just a night, but if I were to stay again in Wengen, this would be the place. Family owned and operated, with a big white dog who thinks he owns the place. Rooms are clean, and the breakfast was pleasant. Our room had stunning views of the mountain and the valley.

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the train station, but it is uphill. If you have a mobility problem, you should let them know. The hotel itself has an elevator.

We stayed for a week, skiing and hiking. This is a wonderful, family-run hotel. We love cosy, quirky, relaxed, historic hotels, and this hotel has a real soul! You feel warmly enveloped by all that has gone before. We chose half-board, and looked forward to every single breakfast, and dinner! The food was amazing, and the service exemplary. Our room was very comfortable, and we had beautiful views. Our en suite was excellent. This is a hotel built in 1895, but now equipped with all mod-cons. We loved seeing the two hotel dogs every day! The hotel is very close to the ski lift, the village centre, and the cog-train station. Great base for skiing and hiking in the areas around Wengen, Murren and Grindelwald villages, which are all connected by lifts, cable cars, the cog-train and walking trails. Lauterbrunnen, down in the valley, is a 15mins cog-train ride away from Wengen. Visit the tallest waterfall, traditional lacemakig, and shops. Rail links to Interlaken, Bern etc. We're going to return to the Falken!

Room tip: Enjoy the pianist every evening! There's a grand piano in the lounge. Also an upright piano by the bar.

Hotel Falken

The employed staff were wonderful, but we probably won’t go again.
We had booked a south facing superior room with a balcony. The actual room was south facing with an amazing view, but the balcony was east facing and too small to use.
Every evening on our return there were dead flies around a window – possibly due to nearby cows. We think the staff helpfully sprayed the flies daily – but why did they not get vacuumed up daily?
A bigger problem was the never-ending creaky floors. We think due to the 1890s parquet flooring. Any movement around a bedroom during the night was a noisy nightmare for those below and around. We had a family above us with a baby for three nights who needed attention in the small hours. After the first night we raised the matter with the management and there was a little improvement as the family above tried very hard to be less noisy.
We described the hotel as being shabby genteel – rather fitting for a previous reviewer calling the hotel Fawlty Towers.
A plus for us was no television anywhere in sight.
The food at breakfast and dinner was great and well presented – thank you. But suddenly on Saturday morning we found there was no dinner in the hotel that night or on the Sunday for which we had paid. (To be fair we were offered and accepted dinners at their very nice modern restaurant at the other end of Wengen – highly recommended.)

On our initial arrival at Hotel Falken we were invited to sit in the lounge whilst the manager went to get us a welcome drink. How pleasant. Then she came and gave us a verbal list of meal-times, where and where not to put the key etc, etc, etc. Too much to take in after a 15-hour journey and could so easily have been in written form. This lady did not, at least to us, have a welcoming smile and was devoid of warmth.

It was good to back in Wengen again.

Perfectly lovely! Historic rooms, dream-like view of the alps, friendly staff, great breakfasts with fresh warm bread, tasty cheeses, delicious yogurts. Very clean & well appointed room , antiquated but very safe room keys & locks, fluffy bed comforters and did I mention the view? In a word, the Hotel Falken is Idyllic in every way. We highly recommend the Hotel Falken but would caution that it is a slightly steep but invigorating path up to this eyrie.

We adored this hotel. We appreciate the charm and antique details, like the classic room keys and lighting in the room. The shower was great, with plenty of heat and water pressure. I was surprised to see a little basket of amenities, like shaving kit, in the bathroom.

But most importantly, the staff was so great. We’re always nervous about language barriers, but the hotel desk staff and the breakfast/dinner waitress, Lucy, made our stay stress free. We loved getting to know Lucy. She was so sweet and made us feel cared for.

We will definitely recommend this to all our friends.
