On arrival we were not disappointed with the hotel - as described, it is modern with a rustic feel and very charming. The staff are very helpful and friendly and the hotel has a relaxed feel. The location is a bit out of town but only a few minutes very pleasant walk along the river so it isn't a problem.
However our main disappointment is that we booked a superior room, which we expected to be spacious and with a large bathroom. Actually it was tiny - you could not have had a smaller room, and the bathroom was also very small. We double checked that this was a superior room as we couldn't believe it, and were told it was. They are graded on the height (eg if it's on the 3rd floor it's superior and if it's on the 2nd floor it's standard) rather than the size. This is very misleading, as if that's the only difference we would have happily gone a floor lower for the price. I have just checked on bookiing.com and they have the same room listed as a budget standard, therefore I don't think the rooms are appropriately described.

Room Tip: Best to opt for a standard room as they are the same as a superior and cheaper

Dear Amanda

Thank you for your review. We are sorry that the room didn't fit your needs.
Our superior rooms are between 20.4 - 25m2, as described on our website. The criteria for the room category is based on: floor, size, view, balcony, shower, facing and volume. Your room was on a higher floor, with a larger volume and matterhorn view.

We checked the mentioned picture and we think you are right. We removed the missleading picture.

Unfortunately it wasn't possible to upgrade you to a deluxe room as we were fully booked.
We hope we can do this next time.Thank you again for your visit.

Me and my girlfriend had our first trip to Zermatt and were not familiar with the city soroundings. Even though situated outside the main buzz of the centre, Hotel Phoenix has a good location for skiers and other holidaymakers alike. Only a short (all though steep) walk to the ski bus, which runs every 5-10 minutes.

The hotel appears as new and fresh, with delightful rooms and great personal service. The only minor drawback, if any, is that there has not been installed wifi in the rooms, and that the rooms doesn't have a fridge.

We would gladely return to this lovely place!

Stayed at Hotel Phoenix with my two boys age 19 and 21 and had a great time this past week. Hotel built in 2009 and owner (Josepf) really did his homework designing the place - nice ski & boot storage area near front of hotel, rooms laid out great with modern swiss style features including bathroom, nice open and bright breakfast area...

Location - the hotel is not in the heart of town but that is a good thing in my opinion as staying right in town or by the train station would have been noisier and a much busier location. They were more than happy to pick us up from the train when we arrived and they also arranged for a free taxi to drop us back off at train when we left. This is important as it would have been a 12 or so minute walk from train station to hotel which would not have fun if we were lugging our bags. With this said, the walk to the ski ticket purchase window at base of mountain from hotel was not bad (approx. 3-4 minute walk). It was also a nice walk when we went out to dinner later at night - what a beautiful swiss village/town. There is a slight incline on the street leading up to the hotel that others have noted but again not bad.

Only thing my boys would have liked would have been a outdoor hot tub but I didn't see many while in Zermatt so that may be more of a USA thing.

Finally, all the folks at the front desk were very friendly and helpful (Josepf, Karen and Jessica). Bottom line - modern, reasonably priced, friendly, nice location in town... a great place to stay in Zermatt and I would definately stay there again!!!!

We stayed at this hotel for a self-planned skiing holiday in this beautiful town. Some points to sum up our experience here:

- The staff was very friendly and helpful
- One can see that thought and time has been put in the choice of materials and the workmanship of the rooms and the entire hotel - quality is very high
- Clean, new, tasteful and well equipped rooms. Could have a small refrigerator though. No need for minibar in our opinion, but would be good with a fridge to keep foods/beverages you might bring to the slopes in your backpack.
- No restaurant on the hotel, but just a stone's throw away, plus the short distance to the center
- Several rooms have a proper Matterhorn view, ours had. Nice balcony and very nice view in the morning.
- Great gym in the basement, new and well equipped (too bad we were too shot after the skiing)
- The distance to town and also the Sunnegga tunnel is peanuts, cannot understand that some people fit enough to ski/snowboard would complain, just about 3-400 meters to the middle of town (incl. the train station) and perhaps 200m to the Sunnegga tunnel. The ski bus every 5-10mins stops about 100m from the hotel, and this is free.
- Breakfeast is fresh and OK, should cover most people's requirements, not the full warm buffet you find at big hotels, but we found it fully sufficient.
- The ski room had boot warmers, which is good, but the (probably) water-borne heating covered the our entire room, including the bath room. This makes it hard to dry gloves and other wet clothes on the floor. Heating in the room was OK apart from that, but would be best with a controller for the guest to set. Suggest also a towel dryer on the bathroom for wet gloves/clothes. And in our opinion, the bedroom and bathroom requires different temperatures.

Bottom line - very nice hotel with a good location and reasonable price. Doesn't have a pool or spa, but do you need this for a skiing holiday? No restaurant, but better with some variation than dining in the same place for one week...

Highly recommended.

We had a very wonderful stay in this impeccable hotel. It's location was near the train station, about a 10 minute walk (although they have a small car to pick you up or will pay the taxi for you). The hotel has a cozy fireplace and bar as well. Our room was on the top floor "facing" the Matterhorn. Fabulous view morning and evening! The room was very spacious and the bathroom was sufficient. Breakfast was very good and plenty also. In all a very pleasant stay. If we ever go back we would certainly stay there again.

We stayed at the Hotel Phoenix for 1 night in January. The hotel is located walking distance into town and the train station. The hotel provides a free taxi service to and from the train station on arrival/departure. On arrival, we called the hotel from the free phone at the Tourist Information Centre at the train station and were given details of which taxi to catch. We recieved a friendly welcome on arrival to the hotel and were upgraded to a Superior Room. The room was modern, clean, large and had a view of the Matterhorn. Breakfast was included in the price. Overall, we would definately recommend staying at this new, modern hotel with friendly staff.
