I can't remember the last time I have been at the Madrid. Long before Tripadvisor, possibly even before the internet! Why I never thought of going there again, I don't know, but last Sunday my wife and I followed a sudden inspiration and did not regret it!

The restaurant is as I remembered it (and as it probably was for decades before): white walls, dark food, traditional decoration. It was about half full at 7:45 pm - not bad for a Sunday evening!

Welcome by the staff was very friendly. We had booked ten minutes before by phone and had a choice of 3 or 4 tables.

The menu is traditional and offers a good choice. We decided on a shared portion of Serrano ham followed by spring chicken prepared in the oven with rosemary, lemon and a just a whiff of garlic. Absolutely delicious: crispy skin, tender and juicy meat. I chose roast slices of potato with slivers of onion and red and yellow peppers as a side dish. That too was very tasty.

The wine list is quite extensive and they offer few but good wines by the glass.

Service was efficient and very, very friendly.

The Madrid is not the cheapest place in Zurich (hey, this is Switzerland after all!), some might even think it is expensive, but you certainly get good value for your money!

Was here with a business relation for a light meal. The waiter tried to sell a bottle of wine and while we asked tap water, he brought a bottle. When we ordered wine by the glass, he put a bottle on the table and told that we would only pay what we would actually use. After each swig or two, the waiter tried to fill up the glasses again. It required almost to get angry before he stopped. Although outside was presented that they should serve tapas, the were none on the menu. The alternative were small portions of the appetizers from the diner menu. None of them were less than 20 CHF so we ordered 3 to share. Grilled peperonies, gamba's ailoli and pata negra, served with some bread. The waiter was clearly annoyed that we didn't order a maincourse. The appetizers were of good quality but still much to expensive compared to size and price. In the end the bill was 130 CHF for 3 appetizers and 50cl Rioja. One time experience.

Not the cheapest but certainly the best boeuf stroganoff in Zürich. The service it totally authentic spanish and you should definitely go with the wine recommendation of the waiter,... they have some delicious hidden treasure on there wine list.

We visited this restaurant last week. Mid-week.

When you walk into a restaurant that you have a 9pm dinner reservation for and are greeted by a grumpy head waiter who tells you to go somewhere else and have a drink as they won't have anything for you until 10.00pm, then you should know you're in for a rough night if you return.

Stupidly we returned at 10pm and were taken to our table. Our waiter then hand signalled us back, back, back to the entrance as he needed to prepare the table, when he realised the linen hadn't been changed. Had our friends who particularly wanted to eat Spanish food not been there, then I would have walked straight out.

The meal came, served by a waiter who we couldn't work out was a) drunk, or b) terribly stressed out. Things went from bad to worse, with our obnoxious waiter nearly taking one of our dinner guests eyes out as he fell forward with 4 wine glasses in his hand.

The food our guests had we were told was enjoyable - steak and fish. Personally, I've had more authentic packet Spanish paella than this, but there were 4 people at the table and 3 said their food was OK.

I found paying £252.00 (OK - pretty reasonable for Zurich prices) for what was at best average food, served by a stroppy waiter, in a really noisy restaurant very hard to swallow.

In general I was very disappointed as this restaurant seemed to have had some fairly decent reviews.

We've been here on our way back home from our holidays in Italy, two years in a row, and despite having to compete with the lingering flavours of Italy and the shock of swiss prices, this place really delivers.

Do ask the advice of the waiter, as he knows his stuff - but make sure you try the "gambas al ajillo" (these are to die for!). Other notable dishes are the calamari with garlic and parsley, house specialty the whole roast spring chicken (pollo tomatero al horno), the lamb cutlets, and the steaks. Take the house potatoes over the regular fries.
We must try the paella next time.

Budget tip: a perfectly reasonable approach is to split a large starter such as the garlic shrimp, and then split the chicken (as for one person it comes in two servings).

Of wines: the Rioja from Muga is always a reliable choice, but the Ribera del Duero from Monasterio is absolutely delicious and great value here. Again, the waiter's advice has been excellent, our compliments.

Long after the sting of the bill has passed, we're left with the warm memories of one the most consistently satisfying dinner experiences, and the desire to return.
