We have just come back from a four night stay in Maria’s lovely cottage. Everything was perfect and on arrival we were treated to a homemade Victoria sponge cake and a bottle of wine which was brilliant after our drive. Maria was ever so helpful with her local knowledge about walks and places to visit. She couldn’t have made us feel more welcome and relaxed. The cottage itself is beautiful with everything you need. The rain effect shower and very comfortable bed were particular highlights! The Sky package was great and we made use of the kitchen on two nights and stayed in enjoying one of Maria’s lovely bottles of wine! Sadly it was too warm to use the log burner but that was set up ready for use as well. When the weather was nice we were able to sit outside and make the most of the beautiful views. Our spaniel puppy came along too and there were some lovely local walks that we did in the evenings. Would highly recommend the Jervis Arms for a dog friendly pub with great food. We have come home feeling so relaxed and we already can’t wait to come back. Thank you Maria for making our trip so special.
Bleak House Cottage has everything you need for a comfortable stay with beautiful views and outside seating areas to make the most of the idyllic surroundings. There are many places to visit within easy driving distance plus walks from the doorstep. There was lots of information about the local and surrounding area in the cottage and owner Maria and her family were very friendly and helpful. We had a lovely, peaceful break and would love to return!
We have had a lovely stay at Bleak Cottage, and Maria was the perfect host.
The first day, following Maria's advice, we went up to the Roaches, and starting at Gradbach Mill, we did walk number 4. Also taking in Ludd's church, which is an amazing gem literally hidden by a turn on the forest path.
We explored a number of local Towns. Buxton is good for shopping, Bakewell is very quaint, with a great riverside walk, if you want something a bit flatter!
Leek was our favourite place, great parking and so dog friendly. Our little Jack Russell never really experienced going into shops before and he seemed really enjoy it. We had lunch at the White Hart, very good.
We spent a morning at Thornbridge Hall Formal Gardens, near Bakewell. Really amazing and they must be something really special when in everything is in full bloom. The tea room there was exceptional too.
For food, we tried the Jervis Arms in Onecote. Again, dog friendly. Great value for money and great quality.
Thanks, Maria, for making our stay so special. We can't wait to come back again.
We stayed our first 4 nights in the UK in this delightful cottage. It was a great location for our base to Bakewell, Haddon Hall & Chatsworth House. We enjoyed the rural location and the country drives - it did help to have a GPS in our hire car. Maria made us feel very welcome with some treats and was there if we needed help. The cottage was perfect for the two of us. We hope to come back someday.
The cottage is in a beautiful location 20 minuties from Bakewell. Fab cottage with cosy log burner. We stayed for 3 nights with our dog Teddy so clean and tidy, full Sky package,Maria makes your stay so welcoming attends to your every need, we will definatly stay again, a beautiful cottage in a brilliant location for walking and visiting the area attractions.
A beautifully restored cottage in a truly idyllic location.
The owners have really made this a very special place to stay.
Everything you need for a relaxing, stress free holiday.
Cannot wait to return with my pug. She loved it there too.
This cottage was a beautiful getaway in the most beautiful location. We had pure peace and relaxation, watching the Swallows darting around low in the sky over the surrounding fields - which provide the cottage with the best views I could dream of waking up to.
Maria is a very welcoming and kind host, who provided us with a delightful welcome hamper containing local goodies. The cottage itself is divine - fully equipped with everything you may need. I didn't want to leave! The real log burner is perfect for settling down by, whilst watching a film (good Sky TV Package - includes sports for those wanting to watch football..). It is beautifully clean (and I have OCD about cleanliness!) and so, so cosy!
During our trip, we walked the Roaches (WOW!), up Chrome Hill (difficult, but so worth it) and visited the nearby towns of Leek, Buxton (great food shopping - M&S, Waitrose plus all other supermarkets you need) and the quaint village of Hartington - great collection of pubs and a lovely ice cream shop.
We also walked to Longnor for breakfast - a pleasant walk and had a great sausage sandwich in the little cafe in the village.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this cottage - we have already booked our return visit. The area has so much to see and a week is not long enough to see it all (meaning we can easily justify revisiting many times!) and there is nowhere better to stay than here.
