We had driven from England using the tunnel crossing and so we were feeling very tired by the time we got to Den Bosh. We hadn't booked anywhere for dinner but we set out looking for somewhere at about 7.00pm. Fortunately Artisan had room for us, the waiting staff made us feel relaxed and welcome. They offered a surprise menu, which suited us as we felt too tired to make any decisions. We were asked if there was anything we didn't like and we said raw fish. The wine list was good and we ordered a bottle although we could have ordered glasses. We had three courses and every course was a delight. It was reasonably priced for such good quality.

We walked past Artisan quite a lot on our strolls around Den Bosch and it always looked warm and inviting. So one day, when the Markt was absolutely heaving with people; we darted down Verwersstraat and bagged a table for lunch.

We got in quite early, when we were only two of four diners in the place but when we left, it was, (as were most places), full. The decor is contemporary and pleasant, with (hurrah), very comfortable chairs.

At lunch, there were a la carte choices but we decided on the two-course “surprise-menu”. To begin, there was a timbale comprising of fish, (salmon?), and greenery, with a small salad of yellow pepper strips and a delicious sauce. It was first rate. This was followed by some tasty, moist, rolled breast-meat, (chicken?), set on top of mashed potato and covered in a creamy truffle sauce. It was really very good but the accompanying steamed veg were a little bland and underwhelming.

We could have washed this down with one of the wine-samplers - the adjacent table had the 3-glass selection of white, rose and red. The wines were described in great detail by the charming waitress but the descriptions were lost on us - not speaking much Dutch. Instead we chose an Australian Chardonnay from the list, which was very good and well priced.

We really enjoyed Artisan and can recommend it, if you are looking for a light(ish) lunch, with a great selection of wines by the glass.

After much searching we found, by chance, the ideal place to eat after the Bosch exhib. The restaurants on the squares were packed and the menus less than exciting.

A real shame that the restaurant was almost empty as the food was wonderful. We shared a plate of delicious beef carpaccio followed by the best turbot I've had in ages. It came, perfectly seasoned, with a light cream sauce and leeks on a bed of silky potato mash.

An excellent wine list with many offered by the glass.

Excellent dinner after the Heronimus Bosch exhibition 5 minutes walk away. My wife's prawns with burnt corn in a slightly spicy sauce were very tasty, probably a notch above my chicken terrine. The guinea fowl was very moist and the beef very tender. Wine list has many by the glass and reasonably priced. Pinot Blanc was the better of the 2 whites we tried and the Medoc was nice.I passed on desert (had an Armagnac instead) but the pineapple carpaccio I tried was delicious. Excellent service, €140 + tip.

We went there spontaneously and were absolutely positively surprised! A really nice backyard garden, a very good choice of wine and knowledgable staff and finally also very good food for a still, especially under Dutch circumstances, reasonable price!
