We all know the kind of hotel that claims to be 5 star but does the minimum to live up to the promise put forward by their rating. This hotel is a prime example.

In the bathroom, nothing but the bare minimum, meaning shampoo, bath gel and a bar of soap. No ironing board, but not to worry, the in-room instruction book claims you can simply call reception and housekeeping will attend to ironing needs. Until you call at 8am to find out housekeeping ‘is not in yet’. At 8am? When do people need ironing? Midnight??

Wifi is a real scandal. The management must love technology evolution. Yes, all these guests now carry at least 2 devices that need internet connections, so lets charge double. Easy money. And at premium rates of course. And we will only tell them at check-out so our junior receptionist can throw her hand into the air saying ‘sorry but this is corporate policy’. At the room rates they already charge this is just unacceptable.

The room was nice. That concludes the positive.

Do avoid if being ripped off is not your favorite pastime. Go there if you like expensive surprises at check-out.

Room Tip: The rooms at street level may have clicking noises from the traffic lights in front of the hotel.

My daughter and I stayed in this hotel after a cruise. It's easy to reach from the port. We walked to the Central train station and bought our transportation passes, got on the #25 tram and took it the Appollolaan stop. That's just over a canal so you can't miss it. Exit the tram, turn right onto Appollolaan then take the first right, walk past the beautiful homes, and you will find the hotel on your left. The street setting is really serene. The hotel is nicely appointed. We were checked in very quickly. Our room was large, with a soothing color scheme. The bathroom was well lit and spotlessly clean. The toiletries were good quality. The room had a large safe and kettle for making tea or coffee. The beds were comfortable and we slept very well. One thing I liked very much was that we could open the window for some fresh air. We didn't take advantage of the restaurant but it looked nice. We had a pleasant stay and the only negative I could say is that it is out of the way and you will use up sightseeing time with a commute into the city (though the tram does come by frequently).

The staff at the hotel were absolutely excellent - extremely welcoming and helpful on all occasions. Why can't UK hotels employ staff as good as this? They were absolutely on the right side of helpful without being fawining and intrusive.

The Bilderberg Garden Hotel was a perfect hotel for our stay, which consisted of 3 nights last month. The purpose of the trip was purely leisure, as it was spent touring a part of Europe with a friend (I'd also like to add that we are both in our early 20's). As we got the hotel at approximately 8 in the morning, we were superbly greeted and accomodated. Being jetlagged and extremly tired (from the long flight and the time difference), they were able to provide us with a room in order for us to settle in and rest up before we would go visit. The room was situated on the 2nd floor facing the street "Dijsselhofplantsoen". Our room had been newly renovated and ressembled the room in the pictures on these hotel booking websites. (You can tell that it is an older hotel by the outside but it looks very good and is quite clean on the inside... if all of the rooms looked like ours) The neighborhood consisted of bigger houses and quiet streets, which influenced the quality of our sleep (I am a very light sleeper and slept really well!). The bed was extremely comfortable and bigger than the North American Double... more like a Queen. The room was clean on arrival and cleaned thoroughly everyday. It was equiped with a mini fridge which was super convenient for water and juices. We can all agree that European rooms are all considered small according to North American standards. However, this one was quite large... we had plenty of room to open our big suitcases and move around comfortably without feeling crowded. Every evening, when we came back to our room, we were greeted with 2 green apples on plates and a taste of classical music (tv channel) which we thought was extremely cute and also convenient as we kept the apples for a snack before we headed out for breakfast the following morning. The check out was a breeze and no problems were encountered during our stay at this hotel. The staff was welcoming, friendly and helpful with directions and suggestions concerning touristic activities. Alot of people might complain about the hotel location in relation to the center of the city but it actually isn't that bad! The 5 and the 24 (2 trams that pass regularly - every 10 minutes or so) took us to and from the city everyday and several times a day as well. It was only a 5-10 minute ride to the Van Gogh and an excellent Croissanterie where we bought breakfast (across from the Van Gogh), 10-15 minutes to Leidseplein (restaurants and bars). It took approximately 20-25 minutes to get to the Central Station, where we left by train on our last morning. I would also like to mention that it is only a 5 minute walk to the tram stop from the hotel which we did late at night (the last tram - between 12-1am) and felt in complete security. The only 2 things that I would have to criticise were a) the total price for our 3 nights and the fact that the city tax is NOT included (but it isn't that much), and I'm not just saying that because we are students. It could be because of the time of year and the fact that Queen's Day was the same weekend (which we missed by a day because we had no idea it was taking place...) & b) the fact that wi-fi wasn't included (not that big of a deal since lots of cafés have free functional wi-fi). Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel to travellers :)

Room Tip: Stay on the second floor and ask for a room far from elevators and lifts :)

Stayed at this hotel at the beginning of May with friends as part of a birthday celebration! It is in a beautiful, quiet area of Amsterdam.Rooms well appointed, beds large and comfortable. All the staff were pleasant and efficient. We tried the Chef's Menu one night which was interesting and not too expensive considering it's in a city also the breakfast. The tram stop is almost at the end of the road and would recommend a tram pass as it's slightly out of the city.We all enjoyed the hour canal cruise particular although you are spoilt with the many interesting things to do here.

Room Tip: Found the rooms at the front were quiet.

The Hotel is in a beautiful neighbourhood, close to tram stop so easy access to inner city. Very close to Museum District. However, don't rent their bikes they are too expensive - rather get a day pass for the trams. Also, a 5 star hotel should have free wifi access. Here they make you pay 9euro a day. This hotel is great, but rather 4 star than the assigned 5 stars.
