We were pleased to get a good deal on this lovely classic hotel with a great history. Unfortunately when we arrived we discovered that the famous art deco dining room / cafe had just been ripped out for refurbishment. No doubt this was the reason for the special deals but I'd like to have known.
Staff were professional and pleasant. First surprise was that booking.com had performed one of their usual website tricks of making it look like breakfast was included when in fact the button we clicked meant it wasn't. Very annoying. Then the room we were given was a million miles from the luxuriously refurbished bright room shown on the website. Kindly they relocated us to that exact room which was very comfortable.
We enjoyed our stay. Since with the restaurant under refurbishment the breakfast had been moved into two adjoining meeting rooms, we ate out and that was fine. It was a tranquil and pleasant experience in the main once we had settled in and I'd got over my fury at Booking.com pulling a fast one on me. I will book direct another time.
